Al-Qaida deputy: All Muslims must join jihad to avoid defeat of militant Islam

CAIRO, Egypt (AP) - Osama bin Laden's deputy, in a new tape that surfaced Sunday, urged all Muslims to take up arms and said their refusal to join the fight against "the Cross and Zionism" was a "malignant illness" that would only lead to the defeat of militant Islam. Egyptian-born Ayman al-Zawahri said the global Islamic community had "no hope for victory" until all Muslims signed on to the al-Qaida-led jihad. "As long as this malignant illness continues to survive within us, there is no hope for victory and there can only be more defeats, tragedies, disasters and betrayals," al-Zawahri said.

His fiery comments appeared in a 48 minute tape entitled Impediments to Jihad. The video portion of the tape was a still photo of a white-turbaned al-Zawahri with English subtitles running under it. The audio on the tape appeared to be his voice speaking Arabic. The tape was believed to have been made at about the same time as a Sept. 19 video attributed to al-Zawahri, according to Ben Venzke, chief executive of Intelcenter, a U.S. government contractor that obtained the tape.

It was impossible to immediately verify the authenticity of the tape. IntelCenter declined to say how it obtained the recording, citing confidentiality agreements with the U.S. government. But Venzke said it was produced by al-Sahab Media Production House, a purported al-Qaida media organization, and expanded on al-Zawahri's Sept. 19 message, which gave increased prominence to the Taliban. "This latest one even goes beyond that with al-Zawahri pledging allegiance to the Taliban," he said. "The whole thing is an address to Muslims, saying armed jihad and struggle is the only way and that they have to suffer to do it."

Al-Zawahri credits toppled Taliban leader Mullah Omar with leading a three-year campaign "against the Crusaders and apostates in Afghanistan" and purportedly taking control of "extensive parts of eastern and western Afghanistan." Mullah Omar is believed to be hiding in Afghanistan, where Taliban forces continue to launch regular attacks, but do not control large swaths of territory.

U.S.-led forces toppled the hardline Taliban regime in late 2001 when it refused to turn over al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden and to stop providing a haven to the group after the Sept. 11 terror attacks on the United States. "When the Taliban and their helpers were forced to leave the cities and take to the mountains, the Islamic Emirate (of Afghanistan) did not fall nor did its troops fall into disarray, nor did its leadership fall apart," al-Zawahri said. "Instead, it began a fierce campaign of guerrilla warfare and martyrdom (suicide) operations."

The latest tape was also a rallying call to Muslims to attack Western interests everywhere to help stave off "defeat" for Islamic extremists. Al-Zawahri specifically cited as examples of militant activities the Palestinian resistance to Israeli occupation in the Gaza Strip, insurgent warfare against U.S. troops in Iraq and the Sept. 11 attacks by 19 plane hijackers. "The key to victory is in our hands, and in turn, the primary cause of defeat is in ourselves," it said.

Al-Zawahri also criticized the lack of support for al-Qaida-linked militants in Saudi Arabia, saying the mujahedeen had suffered "defeat" in Saudi authorities' a high-profile campaign against militants. "These idolatrous regimes achieve victory over us because each one of us wants to save his own skin and avoid harm for himself," al-Zawahri said on the tape. Saudi Arabia, the birthplace of bin Laden, has suffered multiple bombings and attacks since 2003 and has since waged a fierce crackdown against militants.

Al-Zawahri and bin Laden are believed to be hiding in the mountains along the Pakistani-Afghanistan border. Pakistani troops are co-operating with the United States in the search for the pair.

Is finding bin Laden so difficult, that it can NOT be done in four years?

I doubt we could have won WWII with this mentality, surely more difficult than finding bin Laden.

The liberals Democrats are not the only ones calling for the US to retreat in the face of terrorist opposition. They are using their "talking points" straight from the Al Qaeda training manual.

Gee, and we have just so many "Moderate" Islamazis that will now have to make some tough choices...

The myth of "Moderate" Islamazis is laid bare now!

The LEFT? Try again. Nothing makes me more mad then when Bush says "religion of peace.

Now lets try it in a sentence. A reporter asks: "Mr. President, what do you think of the Chicago White Sox?" The President responds, "First let me say that Islam is a religion of peace, and that there will always be a few bad apples in every thing. Second, I was pulling for the Astros."

See its just that easy.

"...to join the fight against 'the Cross and Zionism'..."

It has to really frustrate Zawahri that he has to shame Muslims into joining in his "fight" while the "A"CLU jumped in and became the spearhead in this battle without anyone even asking them.

Could that be because you (unlike the President, Vice-President, Sec. of Defence, Sec of State, and all thinking Americans) understand just who the enemy is?
Nothing makes me prouder. We have a President who "gets it".

Yes -

UBL is most likely North of Peshawar - In the NW Frontier or maybe in Kashmir (an area that is off limits to outsiders and home to numerous Kashmiri militant groups, some of which are deeply intertwined with al-Qaeda.)

Capturing UBL in the NW Frontier is such an extremely difficult task most just can't comprehend. We are talking roughly 40,000 square miles of the most rugged terrain on earth! - Furthermore the Afghan / Pakistan border stretches 1,500 miles—roughly the distance from Washington, D.C., to Denver (just to get a clue).

Throughout the NW Frontier (and South toward Baluchistan) Pashtun tribes are completely in control. A group of warlords who are autonomous from any centralized Gov't - Pakistan troops (Gov't troops) haven't controlled these areas in about for the last 70 years -

Again the terrain in this region of the world is some of the most brutal on earth -Making any sustained operations a complete nightmare. Not to mention having to conduct any of these operations completely in the "black" (for a variety of reasons). And not just because we don't want other Nations to know....but because our operators stick out like a sore thumb in this part of the World.

The fact is Zarqawi continues to remain alive and free in Iraq - Yet there we have over 155,000 U.S. Soldiers, control of 90% + of the Country, the majority support of the people of Iraq who have twice voted for freedom and Intel sources that far out value what we have in the border regions of Pak/Stan -

In Stan we have less then 19,000 U.S. Soldiers, where only a fraction of those are actually near the border regions and even a smaller fraction of those can operate effectively there for sustained periods.

The key to bagging Zarqawi (in Iraq) is to continue to shorten our OODA loop (which we are doing) - The key to UBL in stan is the same (to a lesser degree) but more importantly waiting on that one piece of HUMIT that gives him away - Then put our shooters on that location stat -

"As long as this malignant illness continues to survive within us, there is no hope for victory and there can only be more defeats, tragedies, disasters and betrayals," al-Zawahri said.

Suffer, monster! Suffer and die screaming from a gut-shot fired by an American soldier!

This whining video by that SoB shows that their "movement" is on the ropes. When your enemy is faltering, that is NO time to speak of pulling out or "time tables" orother such clap-trap.

When the enemy falters is when it's time to INTENSIFY fight! And you don't let up until the final killing blow has been delivered and ABSOLUTE VICTORY has been achieved.

yes, it is very difficult. they are not in some identifiable mountain hideaway that has a large security contingent around it that can be spotted from the air, that is attracting attention. they are living in some low-key village somewhere, in one of the most rugged, lawless parts of the planet.

Humdulilah! Allah-willing, what you say is true!
In addition to your hydrology, I spit on their
shadows!

The Al-din Dems, Jeezera Slimes, and Al Qaeda are beginning to lose the media battle to weaken America, and now their shorts are in a twist. By the short hairs of the prophet, we must rejoice! I go outside now to shoot my AK 47 into the heavens!

All praise to Allah the Merciful and to his prophet!

my guess is that they do not move alot. even though it would make sense for them to change locations alot to avoid someone giving the US a tip as to where they are, there has to be alot of risk in moving OBL and AZ from place to place.
