Iran neither neighbors Israel, nor is Arab. They have a considerable military capability. By temperament, they are also not skulking cowards, unlike the Arabs.
If Israel intends to take out Iran's nuclear capabilities, they would have to fly over Jordanian, Syrian, Turkish, and/or Saudi airspace. The Turks and Saudis are well armed and would make it a chancy proposition. They could probably shoot their way through Jordan or Syria, but then they'd have to fly through American-controlled Iraqi airspace. I believe we would shoot them down if they tried that.
Maybe they intend to use ballistic missiles, but unless they are nuclear armed, they will have no more effect on Iran's hardened underground facilities than a flyswatter. I don't think it is the interest of Israel or anyone else in the West to start a nuclear exchange.
This is a knotty problem indeed. We may find the Iranian bomb a reality any day now.
The best option is probably for Israel to engage in serious civil defense work. The mullah's bombs are likely to be few in number and not very powerful. Radioactive contamination is a temporary problem; Hiroshima and Nagasaki are habitable, and Israel would be in time, even with her small size.
If Iran attacks with nuclear weapons, then I would support an overwhelming combined American/Israeli Samson option that would reduce all of Iran to the Stone Age, sparing only the oil fields, and occupying them. Teach the mullahs a very bitter lesson, and make a crystal clear example of them to the rest of the Muslim world. If any other Muslim nation then attacked Israel, I would advocate the same treatment for them.

I have read that weapons-grade radioactive materials have a particular signature that varies by location of origin, and that is a fairly trivial task to identify where an atomic weapon came from.
Yeah, and to think we could have spent the past 4 years preparing for this scenario, in a virtual environment that would have cost billions less! (Thousands, if we're talking about lives!)
I guess it doesn't matter to me if you silence my voice, but I like to hop over here every so often to see what's going on. I really hope people understand the position we're in now.

Spot on....Nuclear shell game,
Free bottle of Vodka and Cosco[China]percent off shipping voucher at the door.
It was only a short while ago that Russia was on its knee's staring at its vomit,
and now they have B.P.developing thier oil/gas and bidding on the paper oil fields Moscow slides accross the table to them.
The other day...and I hope its bogus...it reveals that the Kurds are allready signing pipeline futures from Kirkuk to Iranian Terminals in the gulf.
So ya...you turn around for a sec and Chavez is in a room with grinning Chi coms and the Kurds are saying we know its 3 State solution.
"The Little Boy type of bomb, which was dropped on Hiroshima, had a much simpler design than the Fat Man model that had been tested at Trinity. Little Boy triggered a nuclear explosion, rather than implosion, by firing one piece of uranium 235 into another. When enough U235 is brought together, the resulting fission chain reaction can produce a nuclear explosion. But the critical mass must be assembled very rapidly; otherwise, the heat released at the start of the reaction will blow the fuel apart before most of it is consumed. To prevent this inefficient pre-detonation, the uranium bomb uses a gun to fire one piece of U235 down the barrel into another. The bomb's gun-barrel shape was believed to be unquestionably reliable and had never been tested. In fact, testing was out of the question since producing Little Boy had used all of the purified U235 produced to date; therefore, no other bomb like it has ever been built.
"Detonated by a mechanism that resembled a cannon, Little Boy had a muzzle or target that was a hollowed-out subcritical mass of uranium. The cannon ball was another subcritical mass of uranium, which fit perfectly into the hollow of the target as a plug. The plug was propelled down the cannon barrel by several thousand pounds of high explosive. When it hit, the combination of compression and increased mass pushed the uranium to the supercritical level and the bomb went off."

The moral of the story: give terrorists enough U-235 for a bomb, and they can smuggle it into a target city, and build a Hiroshima-type "gun bomb" in situ.
"The bomb's gun-barrel shape was believed to be unquestionably reliable and had never been tested."
The Hiroshima bomb type had not even been tested, because it was considered to be 100% certain to detonate!!
Time for the US and Israel to hunker down and waste those plants in Iran.
And screw the eurotrash who will surely scream and moan about it.
The U.S. knew all of the physics behind atomic weapons...everyone else...everyone...merely works from copies, often stolen, of what we did.
In general, that means that most players do not understand all of the physics involved.
The U.S. can get away without testing something like Little Boy...the rest of the world can't be so certain.
And what is put out for public consumption about gun type weapons is woefully oversimplified.

Translation of what you said:
"The towel heads are too damned stupid to figure out in 2005 what we figured out in 1945."
Such hubris!!
Welcome?
No. They are going to need to do a nuclear test, something that we didn't have to do because we fundamentally understood all of the physics from top to bottom.
Also, what I said means that they will be able to test in less than 2 years (if they are unhindered by outside parties such as us or Israel, which is doubtful). How much less is up for debate.
But what I said also means that they *won't* be able to test an atomic device in the next 6 months. So basically I've outlined a window for their capabilities, neither overhyping nor underhyping what they can do.
Hasn't the administration noted that they will not allow Iran to go nulear...ever?
You forget the Pakistanis have tested their bombs, and the Iranians got the design from the chief Pakistani scientist. So it has been tested already.
They might be getting one a whole lot sooner than that via air mail, special delivery
