I heard on the radio this morning, that a pilot of a passenger jet departing LAX claimed to have narrowly avoided being hit by a missile. It was reported that the jet was about 6,000 feet in altitude & over the ocean when the event occurred. The news report further stated that authorities believe it was possibly a flare or a "bottle rocket."
I googled but found nothing. Anyone else have some info on this? I dont recall whether it was CBS or NBC radio news.
True, but that was in the fog, not on a CAVU early fall day. Even if the autopilot (coupled to the INS or GPS system) went totally amok, the pilots would be able to disconnect it, in the extreme by pulling the circuit breaker. They wouldn't just let their aircraft fly into the WTC. The altitude was low enough that a pressurization failure would not have knocked them out, as has occurred at other times. For another thing, the terrorists had turned off the transponder beacon, but the ATC system was still tracking the aircraft via "skin return", if somewhat sporadically. They knew they had other aircraft with no transponder returns as well, even before the first aircraft hit the WTC.
It wasn't impossible that it was an accident, given only the weather and the fact of the aircraft hitting the building, but a deliberate act was much more likely, even before the second aircraft hit the tower.
If you mean Chief Moose's DC's "sniper". Those gents were using a plain Jane Bushmaster AR-15 clone, in 5.56 X 45, not a 30-06. A 30-06 would have been much messier.

Unfortunately it seems to be what intell types call an "echo" from reports on this thread! Oh Well.
The last time I flew in and out of SNA was in a mid size corporate jet and we never got over the water. I don't recall any 737's being over the water either.
1:40 AM and a caller to the program Coast to Coast just calloed in to report the attempt to hit a plane on the 29th. This is in response to a prediction of a terrorist attack on that date...Neil had reported that the event seemed to be a "miss" from a psychic he had had on a previous show.
Comment was that it would be quite a thing if proven and the show went on.
Coasttocoast.com is supposed to have "streamlink" and you can listen to past shows?
We may not be the only ones working on this! Was that one of our group calling?
The caller did not seem to repeat any of the cautious comments from this thread. He went right to the attempt to down a plane.
I work at FAA in Chicago. Three years ago, there was a report of pilots seeing "something come out of the water" off the coast of FL and form contrails that shot out heading Northeast over the US. NORAD scrambled jet fighters to intercept. They had the contrail headed fast and high but the jets couldn't keep up.
NORAD had said there would be an investigation. So far...no result.

Bump to my immediately previous post since you have seemed interested!
check my post 465
I am listening for any other callers
I think we'll have to listen to Art's long time guest General George Jameson before we'll ever know then.
I will listen to that call tomorrow...and maybe post it.
I do this quite frequently in a B737. They do a high-rate climb, then chop the throttle and limp out over the ocean before they add power back. Noise abatement procedures.
bump for later.
The show is a hoot sometimes and a good way to pass the time when I am not sleepy. The callers are so serious sometimes I wonder who left the phone unattended at the asylum!
Ugh I HATE the bastards with the noise abatement rules!
Christ! When in that vulnerable time....I WANT ALTITUDE....FAST! I'm no pilot, but I've heard "altitude is life" and I believe that's more important than someone's morning snooze.
Thanks for the update.
Thank you for the ping.

Bump to ALL to prove this "story" continues!
Thanks for the posts.
They sure get their fair share of serious loons.
