In a remarkably odd statement this past week, the Vatican has issued a stout defence of Charles Darwin!
In fact Cardinal Paul Poupard, head of the Pontifical Council for Culture said that "if the Bible were read correctly" that the Genesis description of how God created the universe and Darwin's theory of evolution were "perfectly compatible."
"The fundamentalists want to give a scientific meaning to words that had no scientific aim," he said at a Vatican press conference. He said the real message in Genesis was that "the universe didn't make itself and had a creator".
He went on to advocate that the idea of creation is a theological one, while the substance of origins is a scientific one and that Catholics should "know" how science sees such things so as to "understand better."

The Church teaches that they don't truly know if God created the world in 6, 24 hr daysbut He could have but that however long it took God created it and created us and created our souls.
Two things you desperately need to read, unless of course you're quite content with being a buffoon.
Atheistic scientists like to use Darwin to disprove Genesis.
Evangelicals like to use Genesis to disprove Darwin.
Catholics do not interpret Genesis literally, are not involved in this stupid fight and thus think both groups are nuts.
Right. Next you will tell me that the Spanish Inquisition did not occur. And, that Hitler was never pursuing the Jesuit priesthood before trying to take over the world. And, that the "Trail of Blood" was just a fictitious writing by a heretic. No, thanks, keep your delusions to yourself.
The Catholic Church stood in the way of progress, including the distribution of the Word of God, by way of the Gutenberg printing press, and other means of distributing a version of the Bible in native languages so the people could see the heresy of the Catholic heirachy.
At least admit that many rules established by the Catholic Church were for political reasons. Then, to justify errant declarations, later Catholic theologians would find a means to apply scripture, until the original intent was lost to history, at which time the pope would declare it null and void.
"Genesis was taught as metaphor. Something happened to God's creation through man's fall, but just what, we don't know.
The fact remains that man fell."
Hmmmm and Christ Himself said I have foretold you allllll things, that would include creation and what that "fall" was alllll about.
You have that right, "Justmythoughts."
Given that the Catholic Church never persecuted scientists for believing that the world is round or was not at the center of the universe, it would be rather hard for it to go back to doing that.
On the other hand, Luther and other early Reformers made a point of attacking and persecuting college instructors that were silly enough to teach Copernican theory, since it was clearly at odds with Sola Scriptura.
That clear things up for you?
Ah, yes. But I seem to recall the existence of a bible verse that refers to the "four corners" of the Earth. Was the Bible right there, too???
Bingo...and what it is really all about..
Man does not have a soul...man is a soul...and has a body.
-C.S. Lewis
On the contrary, I think it is a rift between the whacked out ID/Creationists, whose purpose it is to destroy the Conservative Movement, and normal people.

BTW, welcome to FR!
Copernicus was wrong. He tried to order the galaxy with simple mathematical calculations. It isn't that simple.
As an aside, Luther was a Catholic monk who at least had the sense to realize salvation was through faith and not works or indulgences.
He had a lot of baggage from the Catholic traditions including violance towards those that disagreed with him.
Wrong. Everyone knows Charles Darwin is the center of the universe.
Yes, otherwise they would not disregard Jesus' command to "call NO man your father."
Two points: That verse refers to calling someone "abba" or more precisely, your heavenly Father. In his letters, Paul refers to himself as the father of church x or y...so *clearly* this wasn't meant to be a literal "call no man your father" verse. Additionally, what else are you supposed to call the guy whose sperm you were created from? "Sperm provider of lifey goodness?"
Secondly: There is not a single Christian on this planet who interprets the Bible literally 100% of the time. One of my ex-girlfriends was a fundamentalist and told me she literally believed in the Bible. My response, "so why don't you go to confess your sins? Why don't you believe that Peter was the head of the church? Why don't you believe that Christ is actually present in communion?" Her response: "Jerk." You see, no one really believes in a 100% literal interpretation of Scripture. If we did, we'd believe that Christ was actually a lamb and start worshipping livestock.
And as far as I know, no one does.
So the catholic church is peddling atheism now?
Your hate is showing.
You are quite simply a buffoon.
Are you claiming anything evil in Luther was a remnant of his Catholicism and anything good was a result of his protest?
