Powerline notes the outlandish claims being made by Michael Scheuer, formerly of the CIA:
The pathetic Michael Scheuer claims that, in the war against al Qaeda, Saddam Hussein was one of our best allies. And the selectively pathetic Chris Matthews gives Scheuer a free pass on his big lie. Thomas Joscelyn has the details.
JOHN adds: Thats an interesting change of heart on Scheuers part. Scheuer was the head of the CIAs bin Laden unit in 1998, when Clintons Justice Department indicted bin Laden. Here is a paragraph from Count 4 of the indictment:
Al Qaeda also forged alliances with the National Islamic Front in the Sudan and with the government of Iran and its associated terrorist group Hezballah for the purpose of working together against their perceived common enemies in the West, particularly the United States. In addition, al Qaeda reached an understanding with the government of Iraq that al Qaeda would not work against that government and that on particular projects, specifically including weapons development, al Qaeda would work cooperatively with the Government of Iraq

Sorry, forgot the flip-flop alert.
Absolutely amazing.
Your former CIA at work.
I don't know how Matthews could listen to this guy without falling out of his chair.
In the Cold War, Gorbachev was our best ally -- because he utterly failed to prevent his country from disintegrating.
In our war against Terrorism, Saddam was our best ally -- because ...
Bump
I'm sure all our allies promise $20,000 dollars to the families of suicide bombers against Israel.
Does he have syphyllis?? I'm not kidding....the man has gone mad...his brain must be eaten by some disease.
With allies like Saddam Hussein who needs enemies?
Aha! So now we know why internation relations and intelligence expert Katie Couric wanted Saddam to "hopefully escape to Syria". She wanted to invite him to her NY soirees! Maybe Saddam could have gone around the world with Matt Lauer?
LMAO!
She's becomming so left her face is distorted.
"In our war against Terrorism, Saddam was our best ally -- because ..."
Saddam's Iraq was never formally allied with the US, but during the 1980's Iran-Iraq war, the Reagan admininstration invested significant efforts in helping Iraq fend off complete defeat at the hands of the Iranians, and vice versa. This is well documented and indisputable. It is also well documented that the US sought to funnel help to the Iranian government when Iraq seemed to be prevailing (e.g., the contacts which led to the Iran-Contra kerfluffle).
In short, there was no particular affection for either of these governments (indeed, Henry Kissinger reportedly expressed this as "Too bad they can't both lose!"), but a strategy of letting them grind each of their respective countries down, whatever the cost to the inhabitants of those countries.
Now, if you were either an Iranian or an Iraqi, it seems quite reasonable that you might not be all that pleased with how the US engaged in such a "divide and rule" strategy. This is a good thing to keep in mind as we observe current events. Neither the Iraqis nor the Iranians have forgotten this history. It would be best that we not forget it either (or persist in a state of invincible ignorance about it).
The following are not the best of sources (indeed, if others can find some sources with more conservative ties, I would appreciate seeing them here), but are an OK place to start gathering references to this period of US "power diplomacy" in the Middle East.

In the late 1990's, there were assessments of the US policy towards Iran and Iraq such as:

And now, the Great Game continues, with increasing focus on Iran and Syria:

Last week while I forced my self to watch PBS nightly news hour while eating dinner, my mother (87), when seeing a quick clip on V.POTUS Channey made the following comment: "How come he isn't in jail yet?"
I almost dropped my mouthfull of food! And I live with her and constantly try to explain all the evils in detail as to how the L/MSM -Demorats operate and for what reasons etc..
Point is. Repeat a lie often enough and a large number of un-informed Americans will believe it. And that is what Chris Mathews and his fellow scum do on a daily basis. And so sadly large numbers of people that are rather educated and have the power to reason clearly, are equally sucked in.
"bump" for later...looks like some good stuff here!
Amazing what a change of political parties in the White House can do to some peoples' memories.
Amen to that.
LOL..so true! Not only is couric's pug distorted, it's angry and bitter because she just found out men only want her for her money!
LOL
