Bill Clinton Decries His Impeachment In Speech At Hofstra

POSTED: 7:33 pm EST November 10, 2005 UPDATED: 9:14 pm EST November 10, 2005

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. -- Former President Clinton said Thursday that his impeachment was "an egregious abuse of the Constitution" and asked if history judges him poorly because of his White House tryst with Monica Lewinsky, "How many other presidents do you have to downgrade?"

Speaking on the opening day of a three-day conference at Hofstra University examining his presidency, Clinton challenged a statement by noted historian Douglas Brinkley, who opined in a newspaper interview that Clinton would be deemed a great president were it not for his impeachment.

"I completely disagree with that," Clinton said. "You can agree with that statement, but only if you think impeachment was justified. Otherwise, it was an egregious abuse of the Constitution and law and history of our country."

Clinton, who was acquitted by the Senate of perjury and obstruction of justice at his 1999 impeachment trial, contended that the impeachment was not about what he called his "misconduct."

"Now if you want to hold it against me that I did something wrong, that's a fair deal," he said. "If you do that, then you have a whole lot of other questions, which is how many other presidents do you have to downgrade and what are you going to do with all those Republican congressmen, you know, that had problems?"

His remarks were cheered loudly by the audience.

He was only the second President to be impeached and there's nothing he can do to erase that fact.

And, he was the first ELECTED president to be impeached.

This is what drives him nuts. He was only the second President to be impeached and there's nothing he can do to erase that fact.

More exactly, the first 'elected' president to be impeached!

I've never heard of any Republicans... or Democrat's other than Clintoon, who raped women. I've never heard of any of them killing-off their associates either. Nope... don't recall anything about that. Don't ever remember any president wearing an afro-wig or golfing at night in the rain either.

And I never... heard of any president, defiling an Oval Office sink.

legacy building....

Legacy truth. Let's start with the Marc Rich debacle and then move on to this:

A few people William Jefferson Clinton didn't have to Pardon

Hershell Friday - Attorney and Clinton fund raiser died March 1, 1994 when his plane exploded.

Kevin Ives & Don Henry - Known as "The boys on the track" case. Reports say the boys may have stumbled upon the Mena Arkansas airport

due to falling asleep on railroad tracks. Later reports claim the 2 boys had
been slain before being placed on the tracks. Many linked to the case died before
their testimony could come before a Grand Jury.

in the middle of his investigation.

Johnny Lawhorn Jr. - mechanic, found a check made out to Bill Clinton in the trunk of a car left at his repair shop. He was found dead after his car had hit a utility pole.

James McDougal - Clinton's convicted Whitewater partner died of an apparent heart attack, while in solitary confinement. He was a key witness in Ken Starr's investigation.

C. Victor Raiser II & Montgomery Raiser, - Major players in the Clinton fund raising organization: died in a private plane crash in July 1992.

if she were going somewhere. Danny Ferguson was a co-defendant along with Bill

Bill Shelton - Arkansas State Trooper and fiancie of [above] Kathy Ferguson. Critical of the suicide ruling of his fiancie, he was found dead in June, 1994 of a gunshot wound, also ruled a suicide at the grave site

head, ruled a suicide. Was pregnant at the time of her death.

Paula Grober - Clinton's speech interpreter for the deaf from 1978 until her death December 9, 1992. She died in a one car accident.

Quite an impressive list! Pass this on. Let the public become aware of what happens to enemies of the Clinton's!

History has a way of sorting these things out quite nicely. He will be remembered for a blue dress, a cigar, a slightly plump White House intern and a lie to a television camera.

Clinton will get the LBJ treatment: a talented but crooked, favors-for-cash pol. Whitewater will not go away, and it will lead historians back to the rest of the Arkansas mess. The sale of strategic technology for campaign cash will not go away. The shredding of the campaign finance laws will not go away. The relentless attacks, including IRS harassment, on critics will loom ever larger. Historicans will ultimately realize that the critics and investigators were right. Clinton's primary achievement in office was survival, and he did it by systematic obstruction of justice.

LBJ, though personally corrupt, will always get credit for his leadership on the Civil Rights and Voting Rights Acts and for Medicare/Medicaid. A lot of other things -- Vietnam, the hijacking of the Civil Rights movement by hucksters, the overreaching of the Great Society -- went wrong, but LBJ did have larger purposes, on race especially.

But there is nothing similarly redeeming in Clinton's record of accomplishment. He had the luck to be president during good times which he had precious little to do with (end of the Cold War, spending the peace dividend, the internet boom). The Clintonoids are already reduced to trying to take credit for balancing the budget and welfare reform, which were driven by the Gingrich-Armey era Republicans and which Clinton actually opposed. Bottom line: a personally corrupt, albeit clever, little man who wasted a remarkable opportunity.

Historians are as salacious as anyone so the sexcapades will not be forgotten, but the systematic corruption will be the story.

What cocktail of drugs is Brinkley hooked on? How on earth can anyone seriously regard The 'Toon as a potentially great president in the aftermath of 09-11-01?

"Clinton was having his affair with Monica including phone sex to Monica's apartment"

I always wondered if Monica was "sent" to the White House to trap Clinton. Maybe by the Israelis?

I keep thinking of that old song in relation to THAT MAN: "How can we miss you if you won't go away? Far, far away from me. . .".

Each time he or Carter shove their faces onto camera or into the public spotlight to spew some other dreck, I just cringe at their crass, yet puerile, loathing of any Americans who don't agree with them. Get over it. Grow up. But mostly, please just GO AWAY.

My kind regards to you & yours, Jimmy V... I have a long and unforgiving memory.

And I really mean what my tagline implies. If half of what the Clintons did to our national security ever comes home to roost, America is Royally Screwed.

I just hope his legions of enablers have a bright millisecond to realize this before the fires consume them.

Clinton does have a Messianic complex. Most evil men do.

A particularly stunning moment was election night in 1996, after the networks had called the results, when Clinton came out for his victory speech. In a euphoric mood and with a glowing, cherry-red nose, Clinton evoked his mother "up in heaven, looking down on my beloved son, in whom I am well pleased." That's not an exact quote, but it's close.

My first reaction was "wow." That was also when I began to seriously reconsider the drug angle.
