Bill Clinton Decries His Impeachment In Speech At Hofstra
POSTED: 7:33 pm EST November 10, 2005 UPDATED: 9:14 pm EST November 10, 2005
HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. -- Former President Clinton said Thursday that his impeachment was "an egregious abuse of the Constitution" and asked if history judges him poorly because of his White House tryst with Monica Lewinsky, "How many other presidents do you have to downgrade?"
Speaking on the opening day of a three-day conference at Hofstra University examining his presidency, Clinton challenged a statement by noted historian Douglas Brinkley, who opined in a newspaper interview that Clinton would be deemed a great president were it not for his impeachment.
"I completely disagree with that," Clinton said. "You can agree with that statement, but only if you think impeachment was justified. Otherwise, it was an egregious abuse of the Constitution and law and history of our country."
Clinton, who was acquitted by the Senate of perjury and obstruction of justice at his 1999 impeachment trial, contended that the impeachment was not about what he called his "misconduct."
"Now if you want to hold it against me that I did something wrong, that's a fair deal," he said. "If you do that, then you have a whole lot of other questions, which is how many other presidents do you have to downgrade and what are you going to do with all those Republican congressmen, you know, that had problems?"
His remarks were cheered loudly by the audience.

Bet Hillie's gonna love this...
The Big Lie, repeat often until numbskulls believe it. Hence, wild cheering at Hofstra.
The Clinton Legacy official motto: "Admit nothing, deny everything, make counteraccusations."
Said something to the effect that he saved the constitution.....
That college kids agree with his, if it feels good do it, and the consequences be damned....is no surprise at all.
Spoiled brats who have been brought up to believe they are entitled..
Tony Morrison said so!
clinton's downfall besides ms. lewinsky, is that he is incapable of speaking or believing the truth. if he had corn flakes for breakfast he'll tell you he had pancakes.
Clinton won't be remembered as a great president, because he wasn't one. History has a way of sorting these things out quite nicely. He will be remembered for a blue dress, a cigar, a slightly plump White House intern and a lie to a television camera. He knows this and has just begun to kick against the goads.
Ol' Oral/Anal ought to keep his mouth shut on this issue.
"How many other presidents do you have to downgrade?"
All that were caught with their pants down ... that stonewalled ... whined ... debated 'is' ...
Clinton, he or she, incubus or succubus, PHUI
Hey Bill!...pull your pants up and shut the hell up!
Douglas Brinkley, who opined in a newspaper interview that Clinton would be deemed a great president were it not for his impeachment.
"I completely disagree with that," Clinton said.
Even willy knows the truth, he just can't consciously admit it.
That "clinton legacy" has been forged...

CLINTON'S ROGUES GALLERY:
Lest Americans ever forget why the clintons, and all their enablers need to be hectored, hounded, and harried into silence, until "clintonese is only spoken in Hell," look here:
Hillary! and Arafat's wife-
The Clinton Legacy: Clandestine arms to Muslims in Bosnia; Somalia; Chinese espionage; Sale of Lincoln Bedroom; Sudan and Osama Bin Laden; failed bombings of Baghdad and Khartoum; Rwanda; Cole bombing; clandestine support for IRA; Frank Rich; illigal immigration burgeons; unwillingness to investigate illegal activity of Islamic charities in USA and abroad; vitiation of CIA, FBI and military; failed effort to take over American medical activity. Veto of bills to change welfare. Intelligence failures including creating "the Wall". Loss of House of Representatives; Loss of Senate; naming left wing justices Breyer and Ginsberg to Supreme Court. (That took about a minute to compile.)
This is what drives him nuts. He was only the second President to be impeached and there's nothing he can do to erase that fact.
Accomplishments? Outside of high jacking the welfare reform law from the Pubs what else was there?
He was fortunate enough to surf on the dot.com wave. That;s it.
It should for such dispicable behavior WHILE ON DUTY in the OVAL OFFICE. Funny, now he's angry over it. Remember when he said it was a "badge of honor"?
only if you think impeachment was justified
Completely justified. Clinton wasn't impeached because of Monica Lewisky. Clinton was impeached for committing crimes from the White House in his efforts to deny fellow citazen Paula Jones a fair trial.
Clinton, who was acquitted by the Senate of perjury and obstruction of justice at his 1999 impeachment trial
Wrong again, dumbo writer. The trial ended in hung jury, 50-50. Note that counting the House, the majority of Clinton fellow lawmakers decided he was unfit for office.
Finally, I believe Clinton may have allowed himself to be blackmailed by the Chinese and other foreign powers. Here's how:
Clinton was having his affair with Monica including phone sex to Monica's apartment. So unless Clinton had encryption devices installed in Monica's apartment, those phone conversations were easy to intercept, and you can bet that every sophisticated foe intercepts many, if not all, in-the-clear phone conversations into and out of the White House. You can bet your butt buttocks that foreign intelligence services knew about Monica a long time before your did.
Couple this with the fact that Clinton did not want his dealings with Monica to become public. Enter the Chinese, who discretely tell Clinton that they'll keep his dirty little secret if he'll help them solve their ABM guidance problems.
Note: I don't know if the timeline for this particular incident works out, but certainly Clinton set himself up for this type of blackmail.
