Bill Clinton Decries His Impeachment In Speech At Hofstra

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. -- Former President Clinton said Thursday that his impeachment was "an egregious abuse of the Constitution" and asked if history judges him poorly because of his White House tryst with Monica Lewinsky, "How many other presidents do you have to downgrade?"

Speaking on the opening day of a three-day conference at Hofstra University examining his presidency, Clinton challenged a statement by noted historian Douglas Brinkley, who opined in a newspaper interview that Clinton would be deemed a great president were it not for his impeachment.

"I completely disagree with that," Clinton said. "You can agree with that statement, but only if you think impeachment was justified. Otherwise, it was an egregious abuse of the Constitution and law and history of our country."

Clinton, who was acquitted by the Senate of perjury and obstruction of justice at his 1999 impeachment trial, contended that the impeachment was not about what he called his "misconduct."

"Now if you want to hold it against me that I did something wrong, that's a fair deal," he said. "If you do that, then you have a whole lot of other questions, which is how many other presidents do you have to downgrade and what are you going to do with all those Republican congressmen, you know, that had problems?"

His remarks were cheered loudly by the audience.

Clinton won't be remembered as a great president, because he wasn't one. History has a way of sorting these things out quite nicely. He will be remembered for a blue dress, a cigar, a slightly plump White House intern and a lie to a television camera. He knows this and has just begun to kick against the goads.

This is what drives him nuts. He was only the second President to be impeached and there's nothing he can do to erase that fact.

Completely justified. Clinton wasn't impeached because of Monica Lewisky. Clinton was impeached for committing crimes from the White House in his efforts to deny fellow citazen Paula Jones a fair trial.

Wrong again, dumbo writer. The trial ended in hung jury, 50-50. Note that counting the House, the majority of Clinton fellow lawmakers decided he was unfit for office.

Finally, I believe Clinton may have allowed himself to be blackmailed by the Chinese and other foreign powers. Here's how:

Clinton was having his affair with Monica including phone sex to Monica's apartment. So unless Clinton had encryption devices installed in Monica's apartment, those phone conversations were easy to intercept, and you can bet that every sophisticated foe intercepts many, if not all, in-the-clear phone conversations into and out of the White House. You can bet your butt buttocks that foreign intelligence services knew about Monica a long time before your did.

Couple this with the fact that Clinton did not want his dealings with Monica to become public. Enter the Chinese, who discretely tell Clinton that they'll keep his dirty little secret if he'll help them solve their ABM guidance problems.

Note: I don't know if the timeline for this particular incident works out, but certainly Clinton set himself up for this type of blackmail.
