Firefox marks its first year on the Net

Firefox turned one year old Wednesday, marking yet another milestone for the popular open-source browser.

Since the debut of Firefox 1.0 last November, users have downloaded 106.4 million copies of the open-source Web browser, according to the Mozilla Foundation, which coordinated the development of Firefox.

And within a span of a year, Firefox has grabbed 8.65 percent of the market and put a dent into Internet Explorer's dominance, according to NetApplications' October results.

"At the launch, we had a million downloads on the first day and have not seen any let up in demand," said Chris Beard, head of marketing and product management for Mozilla Corp.

In the past year, Firefox helped validate the concept of an open-source browser and encourage its use through viral word-by-mouth marketing, he added. And as Firefox enters its second year, several changes are in store.

Earlier this month, the test version of Firefox 1.5 Release Candidate 1 came out, featuring such elements as automatic updates and faster performance when hitting the "forward" and "back" buttons.

The final version of Firefox 1.5 may be ready as early as a few weeks from now, depending on the feedback received from the approximately 500,000 users, who are testing the browser, Beard said.

Firefox, meanwhile, plans to kickoff next year with an aggressive product cycle, Beard said.

"In 2006, we plan to adopt a more aggressive product cycle," Beard said. "Firefox 2 will launch in the mid-point of next year and Firefox 3 will be out in the first quarter of 2007."

For those who never heard of Firefox, it is a free browser that is in competition with Microsoft Explorer.

I'm using it right now. It has a bunch of cool extensions for average computer users like me.

I am a firefox user, and I prefer it. I dont like the book marks as well as MS IE, but FF is a better browser. I wish them success.

The extensions are awesome. Everyone should try this browser. Almost all sites work fine with it. The only one I have frequent problems with is microsoft.com.

Netscape 8.0.0.4(?) incorporates some of Firefox. I like it.

I use FireFox on my Mac plus I have Safari, IE and Netscape. Netscape is not being updated for Mac but it is better than IE for my use.

FireFox has a habit of freezing up on some Drudge links and I have to do a Force Quit...

Firefox 1.0.7 is actually a pretty good browser but do be aware if you want optimum performance under broadband (DSL and cable modem) you have to carefully tweak some of the internal settings of the browser. Also, it does take some getting used to if you're a long-time Internet Explorer user.

Please note that by the end of 2005 we'll see Firefox 1.5, which will incorporate a number of improvements, most notably in rendering speed.

A bit misleading. I keep old copies of my install software, and Fire(bird) used to have some registry tweaks you needed.

The date stamp I have for those entries is 12/3/2003, so I have been using it for at least that long.

I think it was Fire(bird) .6 at that time.

I've downloaded it several times myself as it is faster and easier than locating the install file on a network drive. My main browser is Opera, which is now free, but there is one news site I read daily which doesn't load right in Opera and works fine in Firefox. The only time I use IE is when I need to log onto my router. It is great for that but I wouldn't trust it any further.

Internet Exploder is roughly at the same technological level that Firefox would be if Firefox were steam powered.

Or you can do it the easy way, and just install the "FasterFox" extension.
