Good Rifle For Auto Defense? (Vanity)
11/08/05 | JoeGar

Posted on 11/08/2005 2:18:45 AM PST by JoeGar

I have a SIGARMS P239 .357 SIG for concealed carry and inside-the-home defense, but I feel I need a good rifle for neighborhood defense outside -- just in case somebody wants to torch some cars. I'd love an M1 Garand -- just to hear the ka-ching when the clip ejects -- but it's too expensive. The Ruger Mini Thirty looks interesting. What are your suggestions?

Just the sound of a pump shotgun rack will move the little darlings down the street....

Yeah, there's something special about it...

Among Idi's other titles was "conqueror of the British Empire".

How about a AR15 with a 50 Beowolf upper?
Short, light weight, mounts for lights and .308 stopping power.

American law?

State law is what governs property and self defense.
In Texas deadly force is authorized for protection of property.

Thoughts?

Dutch load.

A couple rounds of #6 goose, followed by a couple 00 Buck, followed by a few slugs.

The idea is the larger number of pellets in the goose rounds increase your odds of a first shot hit, the heavier 00 allows greater pentration as the perps try to regroup behind light cover, and the slugs penetrate heavy cover as they burrow in...

If you want a cheap, light, reliable, general purpose rifle, you can't go wrong with a 30-30 carbine with iron sights. No ka-ching but still, the lever action produces a very satisfying sound. My Winchester model 94 is old, and a little rusty from years of abuse. I clean it every 5 years or so, whether it needs it or not and it always shoots dead on accurate. It just doesn't need to be pampered. LIConFem's recommendation of a 12 ga. is good too. You could purchase a 30-30 and the 12 ga. for a fraction of what some of the other rifles being suggested cost. I think I paid $80 bucks for mine. With such a combination, any fool can drop anything within a hundred yards, day or night.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com AR15 chambered in .45acp and a Kimber 1911 Ultra. Both reliable and as you can see, accurate to 30 yards. The .223 upper I have is accurate to 300 yards.

The M1 Will reach out and "touch" someone.

If you are shooting someone at a distance, then it no longer is defensive. A rifle is inappropriate for defense in the situation you envisage. Get a handgun and/or a shotgun.

All this armchair bravado amuses me. You think that if the USA had riots like France, that you could just sit on your front porch with a rifle and hold them at bay? You've watched too many westerns. In real life, this will result in a mob torching your house and torturing/killing your family and I don't care how many bullets you have stockpiled. They won't be enough.

Wrongo. In real life, being armed will protect your family. It happens every day. During the LA riots, I remember seeing a Korean gentleman doing a mighty fine job of protecting his business by standing on his roof with a rifle. As for me, I prefer to stand when I am shooting from my front porch. In fact, I nailed a coyote last week from a hundred yards, shooting from my porch with a .44 mag. (I had to work that in somehow)

The mini-14 and 30 generally have a fine reputation for reliability and a poor one for accuracy.

really!? Mine hasnt been grossly inaccurate. Groups at 50-100 yards have been "decent" but not great. It's just that damn jamming problem that makes me hate the gun.

M1A or M14 by Springfield Armory. The 'ka-ching' states loudly..."I'm out". M1A is 308. M1 is 30-06. Both nice cartridges.

The problem with a lever action rifle in a combat scenario is the time to reload. With an AR all you have to do is change magazines.

On the other hand, if you don't have extra magazines, a 30-30 is faster to reload then an AR-15.

You're the second person to bring up a .177 pellet... Why a .177 vs something like a Beeman Kodiak in .25 (750 fps muzzle, and faster than the .177 at 40 yards.) Obviously the .177 shoots flatter, but are there other reasons?

On a related note, can anyone provide a net resource describing what actions a person can do to protect their property and family?

A hundred years ago, there was a gun mounted on a swivel with trip wires attached so that if someone tripped the wire, the gun would point at the trespasser and shoot at them. Is that illegal? Are bear traps and such illegal?

Thanks!

The first line of defense in a civilized country is our police force.

Yes, we all saw how that worked in New Orleans. You watch way too much mainstream media. The police did little or nothing to stop the lawlessness. They joined the looting in some cases.

Now assume this scenario:
Your wife is about to be raped in your living-room by a couple of thugs. You are standing by the nightstand where you have a gun and a telephone that you could use to call 9-11. Which "first line of defense" is most likely to save your wife from being raped and possibly murdered? Did you happen to watch the police response at Columbine while all the students were being shot?

Some of these people have been watching too many movies. You cannot use deadly force to protect property alone. Its well settled common law. If a guy breaks into your house, its a different story, but you can't shoot the guy in the back if he is running away and has only robbed some money.

These people are kidding themselves if they think they won't do serious time for shooting someone while defending a car.

30-06 with a scope for the single molitov slinger

I would have to respectfully disagree. A scope is the last thing you want. Too hard to use in low light situations or on close in, fast moving targets due to the narrow field of view. Good old iron sights would be best for such a situation. In most urban settings, you just wouldn't have much need for a very long range shot, requiring a scope anyway.

Its only illegal if you get caught. When you live on many acres in a wooded area, neighbors never hear anything or don't care ...

Remember: SHOOT, SHOVEL, AND SHUT-UP!
