Some of these people have been watching too many movies. You cannot use deadly force to protect property alone. Its well settled common law. If a guy breaks into your house, its a different story, but you can't shoot the guy in the back if he is running away and has only robbed some money.
These people are kidding themselves if they think they won't do serious time for shooting someone while defending a car.

Its only illegal if you get caught. When you live on many acres in a wooded area, neighbors never hear anything or don't care ...

Several years ago in Houston a vehicle repossessor was killed by a rifle bullet fired from the window in the house as he drove away - he was out of the driveway and on the road.. He was found in the cab of his vehicle, which was in a ditch.
No charges were filed.
