I have a SIGARMS P239 .357 SIG for concealed carry and inside-the-home defense, but I feel I need a good rifle for neighborhood defense outside -- just in case somebody wants to torch some cars. I'd love an M1 Garand -- just to hear the ka-ching when the clip ejects -- but it's too expensive. The Ruger Mini Thirty looks interesting. What are your suggestions?
Try a mini 14 with folding stock , it fires a .223 as fast as you can pull the trigger and there are lots of after market add ons for up grading (Flash suppressor, Red Dot sight , 10 , 20 , 30 , and 40 round clips , folding stocks and more) . They generally sell for around $450.00 . I refer to mine as the "Anarchy Buster" You can also buy a 1000 rounds of .223 ammo for around $100.00 , which makes it economic to own , good luck ....
We have lots of variety, but when I am not at home, my wife prefers a mini-30 within reach. Modified stock makes it light, handy, and easy to use. Shotgun nearby, too, is too awkward for her, but preferred by me.
8mm
I agree. On my next R&R back from this sandbox I plan on buying a SOCOM 16.
If it comes down to that, all may be lost in Boston, but all will NOT be lost in Houston. The founders must be rolling over in their graves at such a defeatist attitude in the place where it all started for this great nation. If you depend on the government to save you, you will be as disappointed as the whining NOLA crowd or the French citizens are this morning.

There is no such thing as "American law". What counts here is how specifically state and local laws apply, especially for defense of persons and property. In the case of the state I reside in, deadly force cannot be legally used to protect property, except in the case of arson.
In light of the legal environment, the practical role of firearm is to allow a person to escape from the immediate vicinity of the threat. It is not much more than that, otherwise it is unlawful use of a weapon, assault, or one of the several classes of murder.
You haven't read Texas law, have you? You can kill someone on your property at night without your permission. But then, happily, "Texas is a whole other country," as our state promo used to say.
Just curious. My father in law passed and I became the owner of his Model 94, .32 caliber. Do they still make amo for that model ??Thanks .
2 Springfields
2 H&R's
1 Winchester
1 International Harvester
All of them except for my first Springfield were purchased directly from CMP. I also have a '03A3 (Remington) that I got from them. CMP is also a pretty good source for ammo and accessories. I have the good luck of living in Pittsburgh which is only about 200 miles from the CMP store at Camp Perry.

I think you are wrong. Our closest experience with similar riots was the LA riots after the "Rodney King" trial. Many, Many people defended their homes and businesses with armed force, and not only survived, but prospered.
Rioters do not have the discipline and motivation of Marines.
Now it says: We're Texas, Don't F with us.
In a way, both of you are right, but if there were large scale riots, homeowners would HAVE to band together to succeed. In that respect, owning ENOUGH guns collectively within a neighborhood is KEY.
never kill anything you are not willing to eat.
I have four that I have built...Have the barrel and receiver wrenches, gauges, chamber headspace reamers, all that.....It is VERY theraputic. But it takes a significant amount of time and study on deciding, choosing and finding the correct time-grouped parts to build a 'correct' M-1..... this process, raises the cost considerably...
Rock River Arms CAR-4 with Eotech holosight.
A car itself is more than the equal of any but the 50 cal round. You can use it.
