French rioters open fire on police, 10 hurt

GRIGNY, France, Nov 6 (Reuters) - Rioters fired shots at police in an 11th night of riots in France on Sunday, injuring 10 policemen, two of them seriously, police said.

Some 200 youths were lobbing stones and other objects at police in Grigny, south of Paris, a police spokesman said, adding that some of the rioters had fired at officers with shotguns, hitting 10 policemen.

Two officers were being treated in hospital, one with lead shot wounds to the throat, the other with wounds to a leg.

Asked whether the rioters could have killed someone, the spokesman said: "Probably not at this distance, but they could have caused bad injuries, or turn one of the officers blind."

The fresh violence came just hours after President Jacques Chirac vowed to restore order, making his first public comments since the riots started in Paris's poor suburbs on Oct. 27.

"The Republic is quite determined, by definition, to be stronger than those who want to sow violence or fear," Chirac said after a domestic security council met to respond to the violence in which thousands of cars have gone up in flames.

"The law must have the last word," Chirac said.

Rioting began with the accidental electrocution of two youths apparently fleeing police. Their deaths ignited frustration among ethnic minorities over racism, unemployment, police treatment and their marginal place in French society.

The riots have spread from Paris's bleak suburbs to other French cities. Towns such as Toulouse, Nantes and Strasbourg were hit by violence on Sunday.

Nah, belt-fed truck-mounted .308. A nice even sweep of a crowd and these riots are over.

When Little Achmed Tyrone Muhammed asked his mother for a shotgun for Ramadan his mother smiled and said NO; Achmed you will put your eye out.

Just imagine this . If two idiots who got themselves electrocuted by being so stupid they hid in a distribution unit has stirred 11 days of rioting and 3,000 cars to be burned , a mall and several buildings to be burned, down , Just think what they would do if Frog cops started returning fire. Dont worry we will probably never find out.

Didn't that idiot Mousouwi (what ever happened to him?)and that nutty ''shoe bomber'' all live in France?!....Maybe I'm mistaken, but if that's true it's time for the French to wake up and realize they are dealing with ''terrorists'' not a few ''ethnic minorities'' who can't find a job, as they have been claiming. What is wrong with the cops over there? Why don't the French bring out the military already? What is the matter with Cherac?!

Hmmm, I guess one should stop and ponder the acts of terrorism that have occurred on French soil vs the acts of terrorism that has taken place on U.S. soil since 09/11, or more important since the War on Terrorism began in Iraq.

One could be forgiven for wondering just how much France gained by trashing the U.S. non-stop for several years, while giving the terrorists a complete pass.

Will current events influence the French to reassess their policy regarding the War on Terrorism? Would the French be the French we've come to know and dispise, if they could learn from the past? France will stick to it's policies, and we'll soon see two fingers bobbing above the surface instead of one.

They will NEVER learn.

"The law must have the last word,"

Yes, it will, right before it disappears altogether in anarchy.

"This thing is escalating and still the French government seems paralyzed."

They are burning lots of infrastructure but it is fascinating that they are deliberately avoiding murder.

These are not the suicidal islamofascists that many make them out to be.

Chirac is confident that in any war of definitions, the French will prevail.

By definition???!!! Sounds like Chirac is still living in his fantasy theoretical world of socialism as it outght to be, not as it actually is.

---The rag-heads could offer France a land-for-peace deal. The rag-heads will promise not to terrorize, loot, or burn, and in exchange the rag-heads get the Left Bank. The Libruls think such a deal will work in Isreal, so why not do the same deal in France?---

It's been done before. When the Vikings were threatening Paris, the Northmen were given Nor-man-dy.

Excellent point. I have been wondering about the lack of loss of life. (Please don't think that I have been hoping for it, I have not.) In any serious rioting there are injuries and death. This almost seems as if the French are allowing this disturbance to play itself out.

My husband was joking last night about the need to replace all of the cars that have been destroyed. He said look how many jobs will be created helping the stagnate French economy. (Joker!)

A group called "SOS Racism"(that's my best English translation) is saying that the French media is sensationizing the violence. I saw this on French TV news site LCI. Also, it appears 29 police were injured today at Gringy, south of Paris, the way I translate it.
