Lynn Swann for Governor
Team 88 ^ | Lynn Swann

Posted on 11/01/2005 2:12:37 PM PST by sportutegrl

Pennsylvania is crippled by an absolute refusal of this administration to curb spending or lower taxes on job creators. A study conducted a few years ago found that business taxes per employee were 58% higher than the national average. Pennsylvania ranks 5th highest in the category of business taxes collected per employee. That has not changed under Governor Rendell.

Take for example the Rendell tax increase of 2003. While the administration fought for the increase of the Personal Income Tax (PIT) as a way to pay for their out of control spending, they never once considered the impact it would have on our job creators. Business partnerships, “S”-corporations, limited liability corporations, and other similar small businesses pay their taxes through the PIT.

Governor Rendell’s initial tax increase plan, an increase in the PIT by 34%, would have cost small businesses $3.2 billion over 8 years.

Raising taxes on our job creators is not the way to turn around the economy. After all, it is estimated that small businesses create almost 70% of our new jobs.

A recent study concluded that Pennsylvania missed creating over 33,000 new jobs in 2004 alone thanks to the Rendell tax increase. Instead of ranking in the bottom half of the country in job creation, we could have climbed into the top 20.

Our Corporate Net Income Tax is currently at 9.99%. This gives us the distinction of having the 3rd highest rate of the 44 states that have corporate income taxes.

When it comes to spending, this administration has never seen a dollar it hasn’t wanted to spend. The past three Rendell budgets have increased spending by over 18%, and the cost of government per family has increased $2,700 for each family of four.

It's not too perceptive. When they repeatedly post the the website, it's pretty obvious.

PA Republicans are not about to walk away and allow this great Commonwealth, where the Declaration of Independece was signed, to fall totally into the hands of the enemy.

Rendell can be beat. We just have to carefully and thoughtfully choose the man to do it in the primaries.

Scranton is the (not-too-bright) heir of a wealthy political family; Panyard is a lifelong lobbyist (UGH!)

Lynn Swann appears to be Da Man for Da Job!

When Lynn Swann runs, expect the Jesse Jacksons to come out and label him as an Oreo, black on the outside, white on the inside.

They can't stand a man of prinicple, conservative economic principles and one not beholden to their race-baiting tactics.

Expect it to be ugly. But Swann will call upon his friends and supporters and it may be the fight the Jesse Jacksons back off of. (IMO and he was one of the greatest receivers, that from a Raider fan.)

PA is ready for its first black Governor.

Swannn is a man of impeccable reputation. I'd like to hear Jesse or Al say a word against him. They would be run out of the state on a rail.

It will be a very interesting contest.

They can't do to Swannie what they did to Steele. First, the national media will pick it up. This will hit ESPN and we will see what happens. Swann is an affable guy and no matter his politics, sports guys like him and will not say a bad word against him. Most of them. Some sportswriters will be smoked out.

For the long-term health of the GOP, Swann, being famous and well-liked will break the monopoly that the Dems have over black voters. Even if 25% of blacks do not vote Dem, that party will never be able to elect a president or have more than 40 Senators. Ever.

Bet me...they will try. Before you know it, Swann will be a cotton picker for George Bush. Yessah, just a good ol' boy!

ooo....my.....you're perceptive aren't you?

Yep, I'm supporting Panyard because he's the ONLY candidate for governor who is 100% pro-life.

I'll encourage my family NOT to vote for anyone who puts his stooges on this board to run down the other candidates.

There is a split in the pro-life community in Pennsylvania. It's a shame really. But there is a small, but vocal faction that will only support Constitution Party like candidates. They did not support Bush in his runs for president. In other words, they are windmill tilters who are more concerned about being right than saving babies or furthering conservative causes.

I have no doubt Panyard is a good man, in fact, he's probably closer to me on the issues than Swann. But Swann is ELECTABLE. He has said he is pro-life and pro-2nd ammendment. There will be some Blacks in Philly who would have voted for Rendell, but will just stay home if they are forced to choose between Rendell and Swann. There will be others who will in fact vote for Swann - folks who would never otherwise vote Republican. At this point in time Pennsylvania needs a conservative Republican.

If it turns out Swannie is a RINO giving lip service to conservatives, I will be happy to back Panyard, but in the meantime, I'm going with Swann.

I heard him speak at the National Veterans Wheelchair Games a few years back.

He's an articulate man, and a better choice than Fast Eddie by far.

We'll have to wait and see where he stands on the issues, but it looks promising.

And he has the name recognition to compete with Rendell in Philly and Pittsburgh.

"In order to win, he's got to take Pittsburgh and Philadelphia"

Republicans don't have to take Philly to win in PA. They just have to lose it by around 250,000 votes or less (Pres. Bush lost Philly by 412,000 in 2004 and lost the state by less than 150,000).

If Swann holds down Rendell's margin there, he should clean up in western PA. He's a legend out there.

"He's a legend out there."

He's a FOOTBALL legend. How does playing wide receiver prepare you to run a state? LOL. Celebrity status alone does not a good Governor make.

It appears that the party is ready to endorse Scranton.

THe point was that a FOOTBALL legend is more well known than an legislator. Will he be a good Governor? I have no idea, but you cannot deny that celebrity will garner votes that the "best candidate for the job" could never get.

Panyard seems like a very good man, but the fact is he has no chance of beating Rendell. Swann is the only person who could possibly beat Rendell.

Sometimes pragmatism has to triumph over stubbornism. Is it better to get a Governor who supports ZERO ZIP ZILCH positions you do just so you can say that a man who supprts 100% ran and got beat -- or do you take a person who maybe supports 60-70% of your positions and wins?

Philly will be tough, but he's a big hero in the 'burgh, and that may well be worth enough votes to give Swann an excellent chance.

A Republican does not need to "take" Pittsburgh or Philadelphia to win state-wide. They only need to cut into the Democrat margin of victory. The other factor going for Swann is the fact that he would be the first major party black candidate for state-wide office. That fact alone will cut into Rendell's margin, especially in Philly. Swann will easily take the swing suburbs around Pittsburgh where he is a living legend, well known and respected, and where Rendell lacks automatic support even among the hard-line union Democrats. Rendell is seen as another Philly machine pol, too liberal on guns and abortion, and not especially good for the Western part of the state.

If Swann can stump the state, especially Philadelphia, with messages as strong and coherent as the above while capitalizing on the outrage over pay raises, and state government in general, Fast Eddie is history.

But first, Swann needs to win the Republican nomination which might be a problem with the party's ossified "old boy" network usually favoring some long time loyal hack who's paid his dues. If he gets the nomination, the Democrats will begin playing nasty as hell like they are with Steele in Maryland. A high-profile black Republican is their worst nightmare and they will do anything to stop it.

Should be an interesting year.

Gee, that's nice. Tell him he should be running for congress or the Supreme Court then because the Governor of a state can't do squat about abortion. It's not in his power.

WAKE UP and quit letting these one-horse bozos twist your head and run off with your money.

Do you have any idea what the guy has been doing in the 20 years since he retired?

Judging by what PA has now, being a football player can't be any worse. Apparently being a DA and Mayor isn't much help either. LMAO.

Yeah he's a football legend. But his name is also well known in the state. I lived there for 14 years.

No one outside of the PA Constipation party have heard of Paynard. He has no chance in Hades of winning anything.

Swann has a chance to counter Rendell in Philly. Swann will win the Central and Western parts of the state easily. Paynard has NO such chance.
