just breaking!!!!!!!!
I wonder Ann Coulter will let us take off our "Impeach Bush" bumper stickers now. Kristol can have back all those WWKD bracelets too!
The pundits have ignored the Plame fiasco in favor of whining and crying about their inability to control the GOP.
The likely reason Miers has withdrawn is because things at the WH are about to get worse. Indictments, whatever. The WH and the GOP can't fight off the old left and the new left both, so the new left has been appeased to shut them up.
Jeeze.
Uh, we weren't opposed to her because she was an "evangelical."
We were opposed to her because that was her ONLY "qualification" put forward by her defenders.
Don't hold your breath on that one. The Gang of 14 aren't going to allow anything to happen, Frist is powerless.
The battle is only half-won.
Total BS!
Amen to that.
I think you meant Haynsworth and Carswell. Abe Fortas was a crony of Lyndon Johnson, who unsuccessfully tried to have him become Chief Justice upon the departure of Earl Warren.
Trent Lott is doing a good job too - on FoxNews. --- good.
You people need to read some history. Following a person rather than a philosophy is always dangerous for a society. When Bush is out of office, and planning his library, we will still have to struggle on just have we have for many years. Conservatism first, and everything else including this President that I still admire second.
Laura Ingraham, too!!!
I can't believe they didn't announce this before Katie interviewed Coulter this morning......
But will the next nominee be even worse??
Sorry, W, I still don't know whether to trust you on this or not. Give us Luttig, or Brown, or Owen.
My problem with the whole "opposition" thing was that the woman never even got to hearings. What could be found out about her was fragmentary at best, and generally several years old; she certainly deserved a chance to have her say in hearings. Then I would have been opposed or in favor, but on an informed basis.
I don't like this scenario where a wolf pack can begin baying - and the baying is taken up almost responsively after a senior wolf such as Ann Coulter or Bill Kristol sounds off - and the President is forced to change a decision without even having a chance to have it subjected to the usual procedure.
(I don't think anyone wants to go through this he!! to get an appointment...the attitude in DC is just plain nasty!!!!!)
This is a byproduct of the power the Supremes have accrued onto themselves. Add the fact that they are appointed for life, and you can see that there should be a battle for each one. At least a President is voted for every 4 years! It's time for an amendment to the Constitution to change the life tenure of judges.
Some of us felt that way about this pick. Paraphrasing Otter from "Animal House": "We f***** up; we trusted him."
The nomination turned out badly, and GWB has to assume blame for that. Some of the criticism of the nomination was fair and accurate; other criticism was over-the-top and disgusting.
This withdrawal is no victory for anyone (except the 'Rats). The President now has to choose between nominating someone totally unacceptable to the Right, and nominating someone who is filibuster bait. Or, he might try to straddle the fence with a pick like Edith Clement. What a mess.
Trent Lott is a blowhard.....
Or half lost.
The country club republicans lose, real conservatives and what they stand for wins out.
It's a good day for the good guys.
We need to send a clear message that we will go to the mat to fight for a solid conservative like JRB.
