We have a very deep bench of conservative jurists for Bush to choose from. That's what made his nomination of Miers so inexplicable. As you correctly stated, he does not have to turn this into a knock-down, drag-out fight with the moderates and liberals to get a good candidate confirmed. I find it disturbing that there are so many bomb-throwers here that want him to stick his thumbs in the eyes of our opponents just for the sake of doing it.

I bet you wouldn't rationialize a Bush decision like you just did Reagans.

I suppose we will just have to disagree regarding our recollection then. I do certainly remember many classless insults of Miers on my side. But however baseless (no pun intended) and rude these claims were, they were not an insult to the freepers supporting her. Silly posts attempting to say we should now vote for Hillary, however idiotic, were not direct insults to freepers supporting Miers.

I will grant that my side immediately attacked Bush and Miers. Then your side attacked US, not JRB or someone we supported, but us. There is a difference between insulting someone you support and insulting you, at least in my opinion.

Sorry, I was looking over my reply queue and found that I had missed your post earlier.

There will be no reunification. The bile and hatred directed at Ms. Miers has created a permanent rift. Even now, on this thread, after she has withdrawn, there are people calling her a lesbian.

And do you really think those people represent the majority of those opposed to Miers? I doubt they even represent a substantial minority. Are you really going to categorically refuse to cooperate with people who've been opposed to her simply because some of her opponents have made over-the-top comments? Show me any matter of public controversy where comments like that don't get made by somebody.

NO real conservative denies someone the right to due process. This was agenda politics at it's worst by those who hate the president with a passion and live to get him out of office.

I agree on both counts. Maybe the day will come when they'll have an epiphany and realize what they've done. But by then, the damage has already been done and they'll have to live with it. She deserved her hearing.

..Sorry, but real conservatives wouldn't be celebrating. Lazz and Petronski had objections, but their posts aren't amounting to a savage victory dance...

Really?... and I sometimes do not understand you on the other side. Just look at my post below..

I am a technical person, missed being a 'blue collar' person but not much, and yet, somehoe I became an "elitist, a whiner and a bitcher," I saw those labels quite a bit at the beginning... BUT, no big deal, this is indeed an EMOTIONAL issue... and we are all human beings after all... and we are NOT divided! we have never been!

TO MRS MIERS, I DO APOLOGIZE FOR ANYTHING WE MIGHT HAVE SAID THAT HURT YOU ANY WAY. Being as smart as you are, I am not surprised you took this decision. I am sure you also understand it was never about you personally... but this nomination is just too important for the country. I really believe that. THANK YOU... WE APPRECIATED IT DEEPLY

I wonder why Karen Hughes and Condi Rice weren't smacked down as cronies when they were chosen to be on Bush's team?

Bush has made good appointments up to now. Suddenly the right is buying the MSM line that Brown and Miers were "cronies".

Lots of people need to turn off their TV's. The MSM and Dems got what they wanted when Miers withdrew this morning.

>>> Only if the next person is another stealth candidate put forward for his/her personal beliefs.

More like if the next nominee does not pass the Roe v. Wade litmus test...they'll be ground into chum and thrown to the sharks just like Miers.

Sorry, but I don't think the "conservatives have been unfair to Miers" argument holds water.

Were there a few isolated personal attacks? Sure. Did some people use her selection to bash the Prez? Unfortunately, yes.

Almost all the "unfair" attacks on Miers' nomination, however, were based on her lack of qualifications for the position. This wasn't a Borking -- she wasn't attacked as a danger to the American way of life (no one talked ominously of Harriet Miers' America), her religious beliefs weren't denigrated, and her prior writings weren't deliberately distorted. As demonstrated by her lack of a public record, she simply wasn't an individual who'd thought seriously about the Constitution and its appropriate role in American society.

She would have had her hearing...If she hadn't quit. But she did. No due process was blocked. We just complained. That's allowed in the Constitution.

Looks like Krauthammer got his exit strategery after all...

It was kind of obvious from day one that it would come to this, don't you think? Underhanded maneuvers are the Left's hobby for cryin' out loud.

What bothers me is that those on the RINO Side of the Force are going on a Conservative-bashing spree after Miers withdrew because of what the Democrats pulled.

"She might support the right of the states to make such decisions, but would never advocate a national policy"

And that is the core of what a good SC judge is all about - leave to States and the People what the Federal government should have no part of.

If the people of Massachusetts want gay marriage they can have it, but don't use the SC to force Texans or Alabamans to accept it too.

That's all we strict constructionists want.

We say that some proven originalist intellectual firepower on Constitutional issues is required

Right. Yes, this should be the predominant requirement, actually the ONLY requirement, and being a Ivy League pinhead is not.

In today's society, The Ivy League doesn't give anyone a superior education over other schools. The advantage comes with old-school connections that come with it.

"Some Republicans out there WANT to keep abortion as an national election issue."

"You may have a point. For some, having the issue is more important than solving the problem."

Amen. That's the purpose of stealth candidates and accepting RINOs in the elephants herd.
