BTW, Laz your "victory dance" is akin to the zombies seeking food, IMO, it's what you "live" for.

Get over it. This is a huge win for the conservative movement. The libs had forced Bush to try to go the stealth route with Miers (with a Harry Reid recommendation, no less), and he simply did not expect the backlash from the base that he received. For the last 25 years, we've been asked to "trust" presidents. Those days are now over. We are THE force to be reckoned with now, and that's a great thing.

Oh please -- don't go all Above the Fray on us now, Dane. You were one of the majorettes in the Miers Parade and did plenty of gleeful nose-thumbing at those of us who were opposed to this nomination. Time to suck it up, lest you now be called a Whiner, Belly-Acher, Crybaby....

Fine you can go ahead, no more than two victory laps though :)

Seems you have a misunderstanding of what "free and open discussion" is, Bray. Have you ever been silenced? Have you ever been told "no, you aren't allowed to speak"? I bet not. The fact that a majority disagrees with you is not the same as not being allowed to share your opinion.

Perhaps the bitterness and petulance shown by you and others who didn't get their way on this one, combines with the fact you only focused on RINO and Bushbot, and not the names that your side used on conservatives speaks more about you than it does those who disagreed with you. You'll have to take time out of your power pouting to contemplate that, however, which doesn't leave me a lot of hope.

Well, everyone should be happy now! Can't wait to see what we get in her place.

I just wonder how the evangelicals are feeling today ?

I just want a Pro-Lifer, in their 40s if possible, a veteran if possible, a Pro-Lifer, oh I said that.

Please don't take this wrong. But I think you're setting yourself up for another brawl over the next nominee. Follow me here before you throw something at me.

I think ideologically the president agrees with you. Overturn Roe, property rights, quotas, etc. But he has a different view of the role of the president. He's never taken an ideological posture, except when he steps into campaign mode. As PRESIDENT, he focuses on the constitutional role of the president. He views the court the same way. Note his total emphasis on "originalist" philosophy and a judge who won't legislate from the bench. I think Bush believes a justice who is grounded in the constitution WILL overturn Roe...but on constituional grounds, NOT idealogical grounds. Having watched him carefully, he believes a true LEGAL conservative will automatically benefit the conservative POLITICAL agenda. But he's not going to put the political agenda up front...it's not in keeping with his view of the presidency.

Conservatives were outraged when Schumer declared that Dems would consider "ideology" on judicial nominees. We said religious beliefs shouldn't be a test. We believe a nominee shouldn't be required to state how he/she will decide on issues likely to come before the court.

Our side violated every one of those supposed principles in this fight. It weakens us in future battles. That's why I think Bush will once again (like Roberts and Miers) focus on the LEGAL philosophy of the nominee. But this time, he'll pick a stronger, better known person...I think McConnel or Luttig, or maybe even Ted Olsen.

Yes, it will turn into an "ideological" battle. But you will only hear Bush address the legal considerations.

You just watch the Libs & MSM chortle that this capitulation marks the end of W's presidency.

They'll snear, "He can't even control his own supporters anymore."

Who cares what they say? It wouldn't have mattered WHAT Bush/Miers did, the Libs & MSM would have been against him.

When the Libs & MSM start on this line of reasoning (and they already have), they're just proving that they do not understand the word "PRINCIPLE."

There is no stronger, more effective base than the conservative one. So when Bush nominates a real conservative, the unity, outreach, strength, and focus-on-message could be overwhelming.

JMO.

I'll take a Constitutional Law professor with speeches showing they're originalist, not activist. I don't need a paper trail, but I sure as heck want more than "trust me".

On this we agree.

Miers is over, I'm over it, time to look forward.

Now I wonder if he sends up a name not familar to us would this:
1. Indicate he is angry with the base
or
2. there was truth to the rumors about those who refused a nomination.

Too much suspense within the beltway these days.

Boll Kristol now has veto power over all Bush's nominations and appointments. Ya, he's definitely in great shape!

I wish Bush had sent up Keyes first.

LOL, THAT would have been hilarious and a more useful use of everyone's time over the past few weeks. Oh man, Keyes would have destroyed them!, moderates included! That would have been worth the failed nomination! Oh man,...you tease me!

The problem with being up to her hips in BA business and the need to know who she was and what she was all about was enough to doom this nomination even if she was fully qualified.

We feel sorry for all the abuse Ms. Miers has taken, We have tried to keep Our opposition out of the realm of the personal, ad hominem attack realm, and We wish her well in whatever she does next, whether it be continuing in the role of WH counsel, or another career opportunity.

IMO, this is the whole bag of marbles. If it take us five nominations to get a good conservative in there, then damn well use the five nominations, more if needed.

THANK YOU! THAT, is the strategy. Send up a conservative, if they are voted down, send someone MORE conservative. This is for keeps. This IS a hill worth dying for.

Huh, I ain't the bellyacher, maybe you should follow Sen. Brownback's example of being respectful and level headed and not treat the President as a dog, rubbing his nose in it.
