Not in Our Name project.

They are SDS/Weatherman.

From FBI Files:

Weatherman or Weather Underground Organization, is a "revolutionary organization of communist men and women" formed by members of the Students for a Democratic Society or SDS. They were originally called the Revolutionary Youth Movement. They advocated the overthrow of our government and capitalism. They carried out a campaign of bombings, jailbreaks, and riots in 1969-1976.

The group derived their name from Bob Dylan's song lyrics from "Subterranean Homesick Blues", which were, "You don't need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows", I use to see that quote at the bottom of their periodical, New Left Notes, when I use to work at a periodical distribution company.

Their first event, in 1969, was the "Days of Rage" in Chicago. They blew up a statue dedicated to police casualties in the 1886 Haymarket Riot. They announced at a convention that they supported Charles Manson. The rally failed to draw as many participants (300) as they had hoped. They did lead a riot through Chicago's business district, smashing windows and cars. 6 were shot and 70 arrested. The conflict went on for a few days.

1970, after the shooting by police of Black Panther Fred Hampton, the group issued a Declaration of War against the United States government, changing its name to the "weather underground organization", adopting fake IDs, and pursuing covert activities only. These initially included plans for a bombing of a US military noncommissioned officers' dance at Fort Dix. But when three Underground members died in an accidental explosion while preparing the bomb in a Greenwich Village, New York City safe house, other cells re-evaluated their plans and decided to pursue only non-lethal projects.

This group released a number of manifestos and declarations, while conducting a series of bombings. These attacked the U.S. Capitol, The Pentagon, police and prison buildings, and the rebuilt Haymarket statue again, among other targets. The group took measures to avoid any loss of life as a result of these bombings, issuing warnings to evacuate the building ahead of time via phone. They also took a $25,000 payment from a drugs group called The Brotherhood of Eternal Love to break LSD advocate Timothy Leary out of prison, transporting him to Algeria. They remained largely successful at avoiding the police and the FBI.

In the mid-to-late 1970s, the group began dissolving, as many members turned themselves in to the police, and others moved onto other armed revolutionary groups. Very few served prison sentences, since the evidence gathered against them, by the FBI's COINTELPRO program, was inadmissable in court, due to the illegal methods used to obtain it.

Famous members of the Weather Underground include Kathy Boudin, Mark Rudd, Terry Robbins, David Gilbert, and the still-married couple Bernardine Dohrn and Bill Ayers.

Many former Weathermen have re-integrated into society, without necessarily repudiating their original intent. Bill Ayers, now a Distinguished Professor of Education at the University of Illinois, said in a September 11, 2001 New York Times profile "I don't regret setting bombs. I believe we didn't do enough."

Make sure if you are not on the side of supporting Miers, it isn't information that came from SDS, Not In Our Name, MoveOn.org, of the NLG.

Oh, thanks for the inside-baseball explanation.

So, Miers supports the IOLTA idea, which is a sort of minor liberal bellwether not well known outside the legal community.

Thanks for the post. That would seem to be material information, for anyone trying to figure out whether Miers is a principled conservative or a "go-along/get-along" liberal in the mold of Kathy Whitmire, in my example above.

In professional polling, a sample of 300 is considered adequate to produce reliable results. A sample of over 3,000 should very accurately reflect FReeper sentiment.

A sampling of 3,000 is valid, but not when taken among murders and thieves. Mind you, I am not name calling anyone, only making a point.

No one has convinced me of anything, other than they all have really big mouths and a wild imagination.

I have come to the same conclusion.

My impression has been that the biggest mouths against Miers are those who cannot abide an heretic.

It doesn't add value to the discussion to call people who disagree with you "big mouths".

Neither does it add value to imply that they are religious fanatics, like the Taliban.

Was there something you wanted to say?

It's all speculation.

No, it isn't.

She gave money to Al Gore, or she didn't.

She goes to a fundamentalist church, or she doesn't.

She supported IOLTA, which writmeister was talking about, or she didn't.

She defended a lawsuit against the law firm of which she was president, in which unethical and illegal behavior by her firm was alleged, and lost -- or she didn't. (Hint: She did.)

It's not "all speculation". It's difficult to read, but there is information out there.

It's thin, but there's information out there.

Oh great, Calhernia, so now we're communists in addition to being sexist elitists! I luv accumulating these titles by correspondence. Bushbotism is now like Universal Life Church. Do you by any chance offer printed, framed diplomas that we can hang on the walls of our offices?

Some people may have thought Lott was not strong enough, but you have to remember that he was MINORITY Leader, and you can only do so much against the Democrats from a minority position.

People gave him no chance as a MAJORITY leader. Lott knew where the bodies are buried, and knew how to twist arms and keep the flock together.

Frist is a fine physician, but a milquetoast, not up to the Majority Leadership role -- proof positive, he couldn't manage to get Bush's Social security and medicare reforms to even be considered, and was asleep, while the infamous 7 made their deals with the Dems to scuttle the constitutional option.

In certain quarters Ms. Miers is, in fact, technically speaking, a religious heretic. I thought it interesting that the folks most concerned with such things were the VERY FIRST to pop up to oppose her nomination.

You'd think folks would be beyond that kind of Religious Wars nonsense, but apparantly they are not.

"She gave money to Al Gore, or she didn't."

Not that simple..her firm gave the money during a time when Texas was mostly Democrat..fuzzy info.

"She goes to a fundamentalist church, or she doesn't."

Irrelevant to a Scotus nominee.

"She supported IOLTA, which writmeister was talking about, or she didn't."

Vague assertions.

"She defended a lawsuit against the law firm of which she was president, in which unethical and illegal behavior by her firm was alleged, and lost -- or she didn't. (Hint: She did.)"

Unsubstantiated accusations.

How can Ms. Miers' support for IOLTA programs be a vague assertion when it was one of her primary emphasises as Texas State Bar President. If you read Ms. Miers' monthly column in the Texas Bar Journal from her year as President, you will see that she raises this issue in nearly every column.

Why is the IOLTA issue important because it is an example of the government taking property from a private citizen (interest earned on a client trust account) and using it for some social purpose without any compensation to the private citizen. Perhaps, it can be analogized as a low-value eminent domain (except without any compensation).

Anyone who has to "bone up" on the Constitution doesn't belong on the Supreme Court.

"How can Ms. Miers' support for IOLTA programs be a vague assertion.."

You are attempting to demonstrate the existence of an inappropriate use of funds when none has been established.

This kind of information needs to come out in the hearings for further examination but it's not a sound basis for not supporting her at this point.

"Was there something you wanted to say?"

Relax.....this crew of Miers supporters isn't much interested in rational discourse......but you noticed that already.

They won't concede that there is ANY reasonable argument against her nomination. So what's to discuss?

"In certain quarters Ms. Miers is, in fact, technically speaking, a religious heretic"

I've heard she left the Catholic church, hence fitting the technical definition as a heretic, but you really think that Catholics are driving opposition to her because of this? I don't.

The first group to jump on her were affiliated with National Review. You can even count on those guys to regularly come up with articles about the evils of the Orthodox ~ what makes you think folks like that don't keep track of heresy?

Otherwise they are nice people.

Oh, yes, and then Buchanan jumped on her right away ~ almost knee-jerk about it ~ the guy didn't even know why he opposed her but he did; then there's his gumbah McLaughlin.

If in the luck of the draw, Miers had been nominated first, and subjected to this sort of muck, I bet you dollars to donuts you'd not seen Roberts nominated.

"W" needs to call Jonah Goldberg's momma and tell her to ask him to call off the dogs or NONE of their Libertarian or other friends will ever get any jobs in his administration ever again.
