Republican staff lawyers on the committee -- normally the ones building the case to confirm a Republican nominee -- say they are despondent over Mr. Bush's choice and some are actively working to thwart her.
"I don't know anybody who is buying what the White House is selling here," said one Republican staffer.
"They're putting out a bunch of positive rhetoric, but they're not putting any substance behind it," said another.
Since her nomination last week, Republican staffers privately have complained bitterly that Miss Miers isn't verifiably conservative. In one staff meeting last week in the office of Judiciary Committee chief counsel Michael O'Neill, a staffer reportedly cried in disappointment.
Mr. O'Neill sent out an e-mail yesterday warning staffers to tread carefully when talking about their dissatisfaction.
A second meeting last week between staffers and White House officials devolved into a confrontational affair. Republican Senate aides who attended that meeting say the White House no longer returns their phone calls and e-mails seeking information about Miss Miers.

"I don't know anybody who is buying what the White House is selling here," said one Republican staffer.
"There are plenty of folks here on FR that would believe the moon was made of swiss cheese if George W told them it was."
And a few of those would believe there was no moon if that's what they were told.
Blind allegience was derided during the clinton years. Why do some accept it - heck, even expect it - now?
I'm not asking for the moon.....I'm only asking for a chance for Miers to answer her detractors publicly.

it's not?
Folks around here act like Meir's hearing will be a conservative tribunal.
That is fantasy.
the whole "golly gee , im waiting for the hearings!" is so dumb. she will likely invoke the ginsburg rule, and even if she didnt-- these hearings do not provide an insight as to if she will not drift leftward within 5-10 years. *that* is the worry.
and based on previous positions of supporting affirmative action and the creation of "womens studies" lecture series, trepidation is warranted
What does "conservative tribunal" mean?
I'm waiting for the hearings. It will be interesting to hear a discussion about Harriet Miers's background, too.
that Meirs will face some sort of fact finding up or down inquiry from conservatives in the hearing
every hearing from Bork on has been conservatives trying to soft pedal or defend from the Dems although she apparently already has support from the left
the only way Meirs loses is if the heat gets too hot and she withdraws
not because a Sphincter led panel of the GOP rejects her
Was there something particularly abhorrent about the series?
BTW....Harriet has the support of The Independent Womens Forum
The Independent Women's Forum was established to combat the women-as-victim, pro-big-government ideology of radical feminism. We seek to restore, strengthen, and extend that which promotes women's well being by advancing the principles of self-reliance, political freedom, economic liberty, and personal responsibility.
IWF Supports Nomination of Harriet Miers to the High Court 10/3/2005
WASHINGTON, DC -- The Independent Womens Forum supports the presidents nomination today of Harriet Miers to fill the seat vacated by retiring Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day OConnor."Ms. Miers has had a long and distinguished career as one of the foremost lawyers in the country makes her a well qualified candidate. Members from both sides of the aisle have recognized her professional achievements and qualifications and recommended her to the President as a nominee," said IWF senior vice president Michelle Bernard.
"While IWF supports the nomination of Harriet Miers to be associate justice of the Supreme Court, IWF rejects the feminist argument that the seat to which she was nominated is a 'woman's seat.'" continued Bernard. "In originally nominating John Roberts to replace Justice O'Connor, the President laid to rest the notion that any one sex or ethnic group owns a particular seat on the Court. Having established that principle last summer, and having elevated John Roberts to be chief justice, the President was free to make this selection free from concerns of gender politics."
"The president selected his trusted friend and attorney Harriet Miers. We do not doubt that Ms. Miers is qualified for the post, and for that reason, the Senate should act quickly to confirm her," added Bernard.
"Only time will tell whether Ms. Miers will be a justice who understands the difference between law and politics and who exercises her judicial power with restraint. We are cautiously optimistic."
"Was there something particularly abhorrent about the series?"
1. it was created in the late 90s
2. named for louise raggio, a democrat
3. first speaker was gloria steinem
4. Patricia Schroeder (radical leftist who tried to weaken our military with the tailhook scandal)
aside from that-- the fact that it was a "women's studies" lecture series is enough to raise red flags for those who are familiar with the left. women's studies courses at the university level are filled with nothing more than marxist feminist drivel, hate men, hate marraige, "its a woman's right to choose" --and other feel good leftist rhetoric.
my girlfriend in college took a women's studies course, we laughed about some of the crap they tried to shove down her throat.
finally, im not sure how independent womens forum could support someone who was pro-affirmative action. but then egain, im not them.
cheers!
What a shame that qualified nominees have to withdraw from consideration because of what the Democrats have done to the confirmation process.
I really want to BEAT them hard for doing this to the country. Well, in elections!
------ Staffers also said many of them chuckled over a biographical "pocket card" of talking points about Miss Miers that the White House distributed for use by any senator wishing to praise the nominee. "They had to double-space it," said one aide, laughing. ------
This is a very clever way to say what I have felt from the get go. No substance to prove that she is an originalist in the mold of Scalia/Thomas.
well, at least she didn't let it be named "womyns studies"
how did an article in the times get put in general / chat?
SUSPENDING JUDGMENT? [Mark R. Levin]
The president has framed the debate over Harriet Miers, at least with conservatives, as a choice between trusting him or trusting your own judgment. That's a rather strange way to defend a nominee, is it not?
