the whole "golly gee , im waiting for the hearings!" is so dumb. she will likely invoke the ginsburg rule, and even if she didnt-- these hearings do not provide an insight as to if she will not drift leftward within 5-10 years. *that* is the worry.
and based on previous positions of supporting affirmative action and the creation of "womens studies" lecture series, trepidation is warranted
I'm waiting for the hearings. It will be interesting to hear a discussion about Harriet Miers's background, too.
Was there something particularly abhorrent about the series?
BTW....Harriet has the support of The Independent Womens Forum
The Independent Women's Forum was established to combat the women-as-victim, pro-big-government ideology of radical feminism. We seek to restore, strengthen, and extend that which promotes women's well being by advancing the principles of self-reliance, political freedom, economic liberty, and personal responsibility.
IWF Supports Nomination of Harriet Miers to the High Court 10/3/2005
WASHINGTON, DC -- The Independent Womens Forum supports the presidents nomination today of Harriet Miers to fill the seat vacated by retiring Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day OConnor."Ms. Miers has had a long and distinguished career as one of the foremost lawyers in the country makes her a well qualified candidate. Members from both sides of the aisle have recognized her professional achievements and qualifications and recommended her to the President as a nominee," said IWF senior vice president Michelle Bernard.
"While IWF supports the nomination of Harriet Miers to be associate justice of the Supreme Court, IWF rejects the feminist argument that the seat to which she was nominated is a 'woman's seat.'" continued Bernard. "In originally nominating John Roberts to replace Justice O'Connor, the President laid to rest the notion that any one sex or ethnic group owns a particular seat on the Court. Having established that principle last summer, and having elevated John Roberts to be chief justice, the President was free to make this selection free from concerns of gender politics."
"The president selected his trusted friend and attorney Harriet Miers. We do not doubt that Ms. Miers is qualified for the post, and for that reason, the Senate should act quickly to confirm her," added Bernard.
"Only time will tell whether Ms. Miers will be a justice who understands the difference between law and politics and who exercises her judicial power with restraint. We are cautiously optimistic."
Trepidation is also warranted by the fact that every one of the seven "trust me" nominees by every Republican President in the last fifty years, starting with Eisenhower, either began as a disaster or eventually morphed into one: Warren & Brennan (Eisenhower), Blackmun (Nixon), Stevens (Ford), O'Connor & Kennedy (Reagan), and Souter (Bush I). With Republican Presidents batting 0 for 7 on "trust me" SCOTUS nominees, we'd be really dumb not to have the greatest doubts in looking at this eighth "trust me" nomination by another Republican President.
"the whole "golly gee , im waiting for the hearings!" is so dumb."
I agree. Because unless she comes out 4 square against their favorite cause they'll immediately declare her performance a resounding vindication of Bush's choice.
Let's face it. They're going to do that no matter what.
