It is terribly sad and in puts into perspective the flame wars going on the FR board this week re the court nomination.

I have customers in Pakistan and whilst I think they are a far way from this quake they may well have friends and relatives involved. It somehow makes the world seem smaller.

the person appointing them must have a fair idea of how that person will react under given circumstances.

Bush 1 - Souter
Reagan - Kennedy
hmmmmm

You were saying....

For the record, National Review magazine wrote an editorial back then that Clarence Thomas will be another Souter.

Correct me if I'm wrong but Souter and Kennedy were not the first choice were they? Also, I didn't think they were personally known by the nominating President.

The McLaughlin Hour ( or whatever the current name is ) had a very spirited debate regarding the Miers nomination. No consensus as to why and whether she will be approved.

Wow,

Thanks for the post. As a person living with MS, I was so struck by the unselfishness and sacrifice of these men in this story.... Thank you for this. How encouraging for the human race in general.to be in such a situation and be thinking of others. Wow.
Your post about these men proved to me what I already knew. God is smiling on our men every day, and they will be victorious in Iraq and in their lives.

Most of our so called leaders are not identifiable as being in the same species as three brave and selfless men.

I was so touched by the post I almost missed your point....

As for Chris Matthews, what can we expect? Anyone who might be feeling self-pity can say to themselves, "Could be worse, I could be Chris Matthews".

A slug produces slime.
I bet they will be power players of the week by Chris Wallace. not.

Thank you, Anita.

" that considering the rino contingent it's always questionable whether or not we really do have the votes to bring on a truly well known conservative candidate."

I believe I read that some of the gang of 7 told him they would no support a truly conservative candidate. Like someone said earlier this week (Rush?), would you want to go to war with an army like the Repubs in the Senate at your back?

"In addition I think GW has a load of work on his plate. Iraq, hurricane damage,Rove, DeLay, getting a budget through congress--it's endless the duties of this man. and there is the thinking that he could get one or even two more shots at appointments to the court."

Agree - he's got his plate full and then some right now. Add Frist to your list. While, I think the Dims are really stretching on that one and probably Rove and DeLay, too, they are back at their old game of keep throwing mud against the wall and see if something sticks. Whether any of those charges hold up or not, Pelosi and others can continue to harp about 'corruption'.

Compiling some of what I said earlier this week on other threads:
1. HM vetted/help vet all of the other judges (all seem to be conservative), so she knows the judicial philosophy the Pres is looking for.

2. IMHO she has a potential advantage that someone who has been a judge does not - she's been in the WH and in meetings on the WOT and probably advised on the same. It seems to me that over the next several years there will be at least a couple of cases on the WOT that come before the court. She'll be able to bring experience and considerations to that subject that other judges will not.

3. Having been in the WH and working w Congress, she has perhaps a better understanding of the separation of powers than many judges so I don't think she be inclinded to legislate from the bench.

4. Another consideration is that perhaps JRB, Estrada, and/or some of the others told the President that they were not willing to go through the fight right now. Who could blame them.

I don't envy you. I took a sociology course once. Found out I wasn't middle class. We'll see if there is anything interesting on the flu thing besides the usual scare 'em to death tactics.

Can someone explain to me the 93/3 vote for Ginsberg I assume the Republicans took the view she was qualified for the position regardless of her political views. Am I correct?

Nominating Harriet Miers may be a very creative solution.

I've found some pretty surprising, but very good, answers to problems after I've decided to "Let go, and let God."

Perhaps the Democrats had Miers on their list of approved nominees because they thought Bush would never nominate her.

Perhaps the Democrats like Reid, are forced to put on a smile and support Miss Miers because she was on their list of approved nominees. After all, they've been insisting for months that Bush should use their list. How can they back down now?

They would need to attack her indirectly, say, through leaking rumors about her.
