October 5, 2005 -- THE producer at the center of last year's "Memogate" scandal at CBS News says she was derailed by a vast right-wing conspiracy.
The producer, Mary Mapes, is one of four CBS staffers fired last January in the wake of the scandal.
She is convinced she was the victim of a group of loosely associated Internet bloggers "with a harsh political bent" who pounced on CBS News minutes after the airing of the now-infamous Texas Air National Guard story on "60 Minutes 2" in September 2004...
"Within a few minutes, I was online visiting Websites I had never heard of before: Free Republic, Little Green Footballs, Power Line," writes Mapes...
"They were hard-core, politically angry, hyperconservative sites loaded with vitriol about Dan Rather and CBS."
"This was something else, something new and fundamentally frightening," Mapes writes. "I had never seen this kind of response to any story.
"It dawned on me that I was present at the birth of a political jihad."

"I thought NBC, CBS, and ABC were the only allowed sources of information. How dare these greasy little people try and upstage our attempted coup."
At least that's what Mapes was probably thinking.

True, RW bloggers and FR like minded sites are crying for death to the infidel MSM. And, is that not a good thing? MSM knows they are on the ropes and cursing Al Gore for their demise.

She's merely shocked that her liberal bias was repulsed rather than rewarded.

You're absolutely right. LGF and PL were much later to the party. THE Pajamahadeen who stopped the criminal FRAUDcasters were on FR. The others helped nail them to the wall, and all were frank in admitting they were playing off FR's early recognition.
By the way, Thank you for including in your ping the other major players early on. It disturbs me that Buckhead seems to be the only player recognized as having major role in this. One other to be recognized in the FReeper Hall of Fame for this incident that you missed is (too long a screen name for me to get right) Robert ... P.E.

ROTFLMAO...she never heard of FR? It's only the #1 blog in the entire blogosphere. She doesn't sound very bright.
But, if she never heard of it -- then: she SHOULD be fired from CBS!
LOL!

OK. Let me summarize.
Mary Mapes was simply trying to destroy a Presidency using information that was clearly suspect to the most casual observer. In the end her key evidence turned out to be fabricated.
We Freepers, being a suspicious lot, simply investigated the claims and helped show that Mary Mapes was either a liar or (to be kind) simply incompetent. This destroyed her career at CBS and made her a liberal icon.
Looks like everyone (except Dan Rather and CBS) come out a winner. Mary Mapes will sell a lot of books and become a star on the morning talk shows. I like fiction so even I might buy one.

Who does she think she's kidding? She makes it sound like SHE was surfing the web and found FR, when in reality, one of her cronies probably told her "Uh oh Mary, the jig is up. Better check this link..."

No one with a brain could believe that both Mapes and Rather did not know the documents were fake. The signs of forgery are patently obvious to anyone who bothered to look for them. Trying to pass these documents off as genuine is like trying to pass off clips from Plan Nine From Outer Space as actual UFO photographs.
