October 5, 2005 -- THE producer at the center of last year's "Memogate" scandal at CBS News says she was derailed by a vast right-wing conspiracy.
The producer, Mary Mapes, is one of four CBS staffers fired last January in the wake of the scandal.
She is convinced she was the victim of a group of loosely associated Internet bloggers "with a harsh political bent" who pounced on CBS News minutes after the airing of the now-infamous Texas Air National Guard story on "60 Minutes 2" in September 2004...
"Within a few minutes, I was online visiting Websites I had never heard of before: Free Republic, Little Green Footballs, Power Line," writes Mapes...
"They were hard-core, politically angry, hyperconservative sites loaded with vitriol about Dan Rather and CBS."
"This was something else, something new and fundamentally frightening," Mapes writes. "I had never seen this kind of response to any story.
"It dawned on me that I was present at the birth of a political jihad."

What? Does Buckhead.com get no credit for breaking this? /sarc
Well done, Freepers! I was a newbie-freeper when this started. It has an enjoyable gloat-fest ever since!
Are they really so stupid? It is like calling Gerge Bush a "cowboy." The can't even insult somone properly!
So, when is an insult a compliment? When it comes from the mouth of a stupid person.
And here we all thought Jack Webb was dead....

And, it dawned on her father that he was present at the birth of a spawn of Satan.

Mary Mapes: The Missing F-Word
CBS PRODUCER MARY MAPES remains a news item because of her pivotal role in the bogus-document fiasco that further dishonored CBS and mass media in general. (Note: I refuse to succumb to the pandemic mindlessness that suffixes every scandal since Nixon with a gate, as if to suggest some ever-beckoning passage to a dark universe of journalistic stupidity.) But my gate-trashing is merely an aside, and this piece truly is about Mary Mapes, specifically about how the mainstream medias portraits of her all omit the vital fact her own father labels her a radical feminist a labeling that, if accurate, explains all one needs to know of the motives driving Mapes documented penchant for bad journalism reporting that is (at the least) profoundly biased and may indeed stoop to deliberate fabrication. Mapes father was quoted on this very topic a couple of weeks ago by John Carlson, a conservative talk-radio host on Seattles KVI; the father, whose name is Don Mapes, said he is "really ashamed of his daughter, adding that she went into journalism with an ax to grind...to promote feminism. And radical feminism" at that.

You can't fight city hall.
We slay network anchors and derail presidential campaigns around here. A local city hall is in the nature of a between-meals snack. 45 posted on 10/01/2005 10:59:38 PM EDT by Interesting Times (ABCNNBCBS -- yesterday's news.) [ Post Reply | Private Reply | To 26 | View Replies | Report Abuse ]
Its just brings tears to your eyes... [IRONY]
Hey Mary...now you know how General Westmoreland felt after the CBS attack on him. However, he wasn't the one who lied, was he? Not one peep about how shoddy and dishonest her work was. These people have been doing this for so long, they know no other way. It's just sad.
"My God, what took her so long."
Well, she always was rather slow to realize the truth, wasn't she? (ha ha)
For those in the media it has always been a one way street. They told us what the "news" was. It was never wrong, they were never wrong. Everyone they talked to, everone they know all believe and say the same thing.
Yes it must have been a shock indeed to realize that the little fanasy world she lived in does not represent the majority of Americans.
The old media with its one way communication is dead. It is still possible to put out lies and to distort the truth, but it will no longer go unchallenged.
Perhaps they should think of us as free fact checkers.
This was something else, something new and fundamentally frightening.
Ultrakonservativen, just like you-know-where.
You bet.
Mapes isn't stuck on stupid, she invented it.
Heh the NYT has it under entertainment? Good place for it.
Notice this is a typical liberal response, 100% kill the messenger/personal attack, 0% on the issue.
"This was something else, something new and fundamentally frightening,"
After decades of unanswered bias and lies, it's frightening to find out that what you spew is no longer taken at face value. Welcome to accountability, U propagandist biatch.
Hi fellow political jihadi. *snicker*
I'm proud too. Damn proud.
FAKE BUT ACCURATE. Plan on it for your head stone, Mary baby...
