In a just-completed interview on Fox News, Weekly Standard editor Bill Kristol made no effort to sugar coat his criticism of President Bush's selection of Harriet Miers as his Supreme Court nominee.
Among Kristol's comments:
There is no way to say she is the best-qualified.
It really looks like W, faced with pressure and criticism, "flinched."
This is an insult to the well-qualified conserative women W has appointed to the federal bench.
W could have appointed Miers to a federal judgeship before but didn't do so. Could reflect his views on her qualifications up till now.
He's spoken with a number of leading conservatives already this morning and they are disappointed.
Kristol stated more than once that he was surprised by the pick and was obviously disappointed, to the point of seeming almost angry.
Possum Alert!
I agree with you, Roberts had his share of naysayers in the beginning as well, now he is Chief justice. I trust W on Miers.
Yawwwwnnnnnn......
Maybe she is a stealth candidate. No paper trail. As soon as she's on the Court, she huddles with Roberts and Thomas and Scalia and they accept another eminent domain case and reverse the prior ruling.
You know the Senate would have ground to a halt if JRB or Priscilla had been appointed. May be able to get her in the door quickly so half the term isn't wasted on Senate insanity.
Well, we'll see. You all can tell me I told you so if Dubya picked a dud here after we see her begin to amass a record on the Court. I can only hope right now.
Please let us have one more pick...a resignation from the left side once they get the drift that it is now a 5-4 majority our way, with no swinging vote left dangling. That may discourage the old lefties to drop by the way side.
I can dream....
My $.02: Judiciary committee will, at best, approve her 9-8 (Specter votes, Not Present). All depends on Specter; not out of the question that he would reject. Then vote would be 9-9. Then in full SEnate, best she would do is 52-48.
Yeah, but how about the fact that she donated to the DNC, Gore's presidential campaign and Bentsen's senatorial campaign?

Maybe Bush is using her as a "sacrificial lamb" and has a real nominee waiting in the wings.
Couldn't he have picked someone a little younger? A 60 year old? Come on W, think!
Fox says Harry Reid is positive about Miers. He is quoted as saying "I like Harriet Miers."
It's all over folks.
Well of course she's not the best choice. The best choice would have no chance whatever of getting approved by the Senate.
FoxNews just reported that Harry Reid likes Miers.
I have this funny feeling that Dubya just faked a bunch of pundits out of their jocks again. No One with a major record wants to get kind of treatment Pickering got.
IIRC Kristol supported Bush's opponent in 2000 and got ugly. Kristol has been ignored by the Bush White House and that is strictly the Kiss of Death for a republican pundit.
DK
Sort of like how he signed CFR, figuring to avoid controversy, since of course he knew that the SCOTUS would overturn it?
Same game they played with Roberts.
Yes but Kristol, knowing his big government conservative stance, is more than likely upset with the pick for reasons other than myself. I personally don't like the idea of picking people for the most important court in the nation that a President has worked with for years.
I'm wondering if Bush thinks or knows that he couldn't get even enough Republican support for a true constitutionalist like Brown.
I am already disgusted at Bush for his agressive failure to secure the borders and his unleashing the BATFE in what appears to be clearly illegal activities in Virginia.
Well, we now have the cheese to go with the all the whine I've been reading on this nomination.
Lighten up folks.....
The worst part of this, is that if the Dems decide to filibuster, I think most of us wouldn't mind.
