Actually, let me add some context based on quick research. Hughes ran for elected office as a Democrat several times throughout the 30's, 40's and 50's, and was eventually nominated to the Federal bench by JFK in 1961.

No, I don't think she would have, frankly. Confirmation for the lower court is not the same thing as SCOTUS. She has a track record of speaking her mind in a way that would have shaken loose at least five RINOs who disagree with her views.

This is ESPECIALLY true of a woman lawyer who is politically cut throat enough to be VOTED BY OTHER LAWYERS to be the head of a state's mandatory bar.

So was Ronald Reagan. So now if a nominee ever clerked for a Democrat, even at a time and place where almost all Texas public officials were Democrats, they are automatically suspect? Totally clueless and ridiculous. There was Congressman Ralph Hall, who converted to Republican after he was 80 yrs. old. He had the most conservative voting record in the House.

Not happy, and really wanted to see Janice Rodgers Brown to really slug it out with the Dems on many issues. As for this thread, however-- I could experience less hysteria and drama at a Celine Dion/Donald Sutherland concert in Vegas.

Who knows? Maybe she will be one of the more Conservative members of the court while Roberts ends up being a judge in the mold of O'Conner. Only time will tell.
