The explosion happened at the courtyard near the George Lynn Cross Hall, Botany-Microbiology Building on OU's campus, which is west of the stadium, according to Sgt. Gary Robinson of the University police department. The explosion happened during the second quarter of Oklahoma's game against Kansas State. After the explosion, police set up a perimeter of several blocks and made fans exit the stadium to the east.
NORMAN -- An explosion near the University of Oklahoma's Gaylord Family-Memorial Stadium killed one person Saturday, OU officials said.
I disagree with your disagreement. Another large scale attack and...
Don't underestimate the anger jusssst under the surface seething that we hold against those that will kill us. Most are waiting for that spark that will set into motion something that our government will not be able to control. They can't lock tens of millions of Americans up. How will they stop millions of Americans from seeking retribution?
When it gets to the point where the government cares more for those who are trying to murder us than it does for it's innocent citizens...
I guess I'm one of those people who are on the fence about the motive of this-- until I know differently I am forced to ASSUME that this was in fact a suicide.
I can rationalize it with the possibility that the younf man was schizophrenic, the same kind of schizophrenia that afflicts many young people and drives them to commit horrendous crimes and do absolutely crazy things, like the guy who heard voices in my college and shot a guy and a girl in the cafeteria that he didn't even know.
But I could be wrong-- time will tell. Actually, I hope I'm not. A deranged student is sad, but a terrorist conspiracy is downright frightful.
First, I'm one of the seething ones, like you. But Americans are deeply culturally adverse to murder. We have faith (too much) in our institutions to handle our revenge for us. We believe very deeply as a people that law and order trump our personal anger. Will all the things we have been through as a nation, there has never been a prolonged period of revolt other than the civil war, which was legitimized by law and order governments. Every other attack we have withstood by upholding our root belief in law and order. Parents of murdered children, husbands of murdered wives, rarely commit murder to find their own personal justice. They let the system do its work. You write "tens of millions" of Americans will be out murdering muslims--yet I'll bet you can't count five people you know personally who would be willing to murder in cold blood for any reason. The only way the majority, or even a significant minority, of Americans support killing is when it is sanctioned by the government in war. A big attack on us would see floods of men and women joining the armed forces, and perhaps vocal anti-muslim outrage. But we are a few generations from being murderers. Thank God.
Amen DC
Vengeance is mine, sayeth the Lord.
Nick Berg? Wan't there a Nick Berg who was killed in Iraq?
I disagree. I think if the right button is pushed, Americans will become killing machines to protect their families. Don't forget, it's families that will be murdered when the next attack comes. What would you do to protect your family from murderers? How far would you go? Would you open the door and let them in...or would you protect your family? That's basic logic. Survival.
You are forgetting, if they have their way, it won't be OUR institutions any longer. With the mass chaos that may develope should a nuke go off, do you think Uncle Sam will be worried about protecting the people who's religion demands such a thing of them?
It will be a whole new play book we would be reading should that ever happen.
Remember the problems the government had helping Katrina victims? When Rita hit, remember the freeways clogged for hours with traffic that was stopped? Take that and magnify it by a factor of a thousand. Do you think with such anarchy and chaos that a handfull of those who's religion required them to kill infidels would be on the top of the governments protect to do list?
You're not thinking about a nuke attack, you're thinking on a smaller scale, a suicide bomb. And, not even that situtation when compared to the unthinkable will keep them safe for long. Let a few suicide bombers set off their explosions in schools and crowded malls and you'll quickly see the savagery in all of us.
But we are a few generations from being murderers.
Don't count on it when the life of your family is at stake.
Yes, the matches comment did get my notice. Didn't Reid the shoebomber on the AA flight try to light his tennis shoe? Wonder if it was windy on Sat night?
This photo of him with the beard tells the story. But it may be totally fake. I guess one of his frat brothers could tell you whether he indeed grew a Muslim beard.
It was quite windy Saturday night.
If so, and the burnt matches somehow didn't get blown away in the blast, it proves that this fellow was determined to kill himself at this spot, at this time.
Yes, that's the man.
As I recall it, the link was to a cache on his computer, which may or may not have been of his doing. There was some question whether another person might have accessed the link, rather than Berg.
Jesus drove the money lenders from the temple. There are many instances in the Bible where we are called on for waging war and fighting back. And it is a war.

Here's a version of what happened from CNN. Norman does have a curious history of being a stomping ground for Al Qaeda.

OT, is it me, or is this site slowing down greatly?
Try working off-line. ;^)
Maybe I should put some sugar in the feed of my hamster-powered generator?
( back in 2001, I was running Win 95 on a 66 mhtz ( not a typo ) machine, and the joke around here was whether I was powering it with electricity, or coal oil )
Thank you so much fanfan. I was able to find the article and I also emailed the news director at the station (Steve Winogorn) to inquire about this. I'll let everyone know what reply, if any I receive.
It's still there, buried in world news.
I bet it's not there much longer.
If you get a reply, it will be PC.
