Elian Gonzalez, 11, calls Castro 'friend,' 'father' MIAMI, Florida (AP) -- Elian Gonzalez, the Cuban boy at the center of an international custody battle five years ago, calls Cuban President Fidel Castro his friend and says he hopes someday to see his Miami family again. "Despite everything they did, it was wrong, they are (still) my family ... my uncles," the boy said in an interview with CBS's "60 Minutes." Excerpts were released Thursday for the program that airs Sunday night. Elian, now 11, set off a seven-month custody battle after he was rescued off the Florida coast in 1999 during a failed attempt to reach the United States. His mother died at sea, and his Miami relatives and Cuban exile groups fought to prevent his return to Cuba. The boy was reunited with his father in Cuba -- his legal guardian -- after an armed federal raid April 22, 2000, on his relatives' home. Since then Elian has been treated as a hero in Cuba; Castro had him give a highly publicized speech on the fifth anniversary of the Miami raid. The boy in the interview said he considers Castro "not only as a friend, but also as a father." CBS spokesman Kevin Tedesco said "60 Minutes" interviewed Gonzalez for 70 minutes three weeks ago at a museum in Cardenas, Cuba, the boy's hometown. He said the boy's father was present, but there were no Cuban monitors or officials and no ground rules. In the interview, Elian said he had always told his U.S. relatives he wanted to go back to Cuba. I didn't like the stormtrooper approach used to force Elian Gonzales away from his relatives in Miami, but unfortunately, the courts ruled his father had custody. Can't really blame that part on (gag) Clinton.

The man was never even legally his father because he was not married to the mother when Elian was born.
The source for this was the father himself in an interview he gave shortly after Elian made it to Florida.

Elian was in a Cuban classroom going through the everyday indoctrination routine. The teacher asked a student name Maria a few questions:

Really doesn't matter who appointed them -- they ruled according to the law. Generally speaking the law favors the parent -- in this case, the boy's father. And the fact that he lives under a brutal dictator has no effect on whether the father has standing to take custody of his son, not under the law.
Elian was fathered out of wedlock, and didn't live with his biological father. Reno made a fiat custody decision, bypassing the Florida family court. This was after the INS originally said the FL court would make the decision.
Do you think irresponsible men who father children out of wedlock should be awarded custody without a family court hearing?

The mother and father were not living together. The father was not abusive...you're making it up.
She tried to enter the USA illegally for the same reasons virtually everybody comes...for a better economic opportunity.

I never understood why Republicans were so incensed by Elian having to go home. What happened to a father's rights and illegal immigrants?
In Cuba Fidel Castro is the father, not this shrub.. Also there is a law that exempts Cubans from going though the normal channels of immigration.. That has been going since the Kennedy Administration..
In the eyes of the law, the natural father is the next of kin and the courts will most likely, in custody matters, place the child with him.
I did not say I favored what happened to Elian. Unfortunately, that's the way the law is. And the judges ruled according to the law.
