The mother and father were not living together. The father was not abusive...you're making it up.
She tried to enter the USA illegally for the same reasons virtually everybody comes...for a better economic opportunity.

Actually, Elian's mother was making the crossing in a boat being operated by her boyfriend, who smuggled Cubans to the U.S. for money. Elian lived several days each week with his father, who was neither married to the mother nor abusive.
