The Port of New Orleans and WHY We Must Rebuild!
Various ^ | 9/15/05 | Various

Posted on 09/15/2005 7:44:41 PM PDT by Calpernia

Located at the mouth of Mississippi River, the Port of New Orleans is America’s gateway to the global market. New Orleans has been a center for international trade since 1718.

Today, the Port of New Orleans is at the center of the world’s busiest port complex — Louisiana’s Lower Mississippi River. Its proximity to the American Midwest via a 14,500-mile inland waterway system makes New Orleans the port of choice for the movement of cargoes such as steel, grain, containers and manufactured goods.

The Port of New Orleans is the only deepwater port in the United States served by six class one railroads. This gives port users direct and economical rail service to or from anywhere in the country.

New Orleans is one of America’s leading general cargo ports. A productive and efficient private maritime industry has help produce impressive results, including the USA’s top market share for import steel, natural rubber, plywood and coffee.

In the last 10 years, the Port of New Orleans has invested more than $400 million in new state-of-the-art facilities. Improved breakbulk and container terminals feature new multipurpose cranes, expanded marshalling yards and a new roadway to handle truck traffic.

Maritime activity within the Port of New Orleans is responsible for more than 107,000 jobs, $2 billion in earnings, $13 billion in spending and $231 million in taxes statewide.

The Port of New Orleans has also been a defined area where foreign merchandise gets brought into the country without being immediately subject to the usual U.S. Customs regulations!!!

So, we don't rebuild N.O. We leave it as a wasteland. We keep the bases.

Now, how are you going to keep the area from being condemned?

I'm starting to realize you MUST be trolling. What kind of durn fool question is that? Bulldoze. Dynamite. I don't care. All that's needed to secure the border (which is an issue you made up) is to maintain a base there. Or within striking distance of there, at least.

Excellent compliation.
I agree that it must be re-built, but I do fear that corruption will be rampant.

I don't understand the question. The Mississippi River is as much public domain as the Gulf of Mexico. I fail to see where eminent domain would come into play.

Do you mean the way the levees were 'maintained' in NO when you speak of infrastructure? If you want to pour more money down that rathole then please get out your checkbook and leave me out of it. I'm tired of paying for hookers and bass boats for NO politicos.

If you mean the port facilities, I believe they are privately owned and operated. Therefore they should have been insured and the taxpayer won't have to bear the cost of rebuilding.

The private homes should have had flood insurance which is issued by FEMA. In that case then Fed money is due. IMO, though the whole Federal flood insurance program should be shut down and transferred to the private sector.

Local roads are the responsibility of the local towns, counties and the State-not the Federal government. Interstate highways are, so Fed money is appropriate there.

If by 'infrastructure' you mean power, water, and gas lines then those companies providing those products should be responsible for the repairs.

I don't think you really have a grasp of what 'infrastructure' is, and who owns what. You just want to throw taxpayer money at the problem and hope things get done properly.

That's the way Liberal Dems work, not conservatives. Conservatives believe in and trust the free market to provide solutions to problems.

Why should my tax money go to some corporation that has plenty of its own resources?

You obviously haven't thought this one through there friend.

You already contradicted yourself. You agreed that Federal money is due. This is FEMA disaster relief monies.

Are you hinting that property belonging to the USA can be seized by foreign powers, under our law of eminent domain? That would be an act of war.

Yes, I am hinting at that. New Orleans had business dealings with Castro. He was already involved with affiliated businesses in N.O. Yes, those are under investigation. No, I don't know how the businesses are structured to give more detail. Maybe when more about Blanco's lobster dinners with Castrol come out, we will learn more about G&F Sex Tours out of N.O.

Think of the land grab that could be at rish if N.O. is condemned.

You may want to speak to President Bush, I understand he will be holding a lottery for the poor to win Free Land in the New Orleans area and will be using your tax dollars to promote minority owned business in the area.

Each is a great move and will help New Orleans once again become a great city.

Do you have a comprehension problem or are you deliberately being obtuse?

My money is on the former.

That would tack closely along with your apparently lid-dem political philosophy.

Good bye.

" The private homes should have had flood insurance which is issued by FEMA. In that case then Fed money is due."

The emergency appropriations are through FEMA

So were you for it before you were against it? ^-^

Both Napoleon and the British knew how important was the city of New Orleans. It thought it was fitting that Bush stood before the statute of General Jackson. I thought to myself: If HE had been in charge of the Guard at the Conveention Center, he would have have taken care of the thugs in short order. Aftter Kent State, the Guard is afraid of its shadow when confronted with civilian rioters. I read this morning that Honore said they were not trained to deal with riots. Why the heck NOT? What IS the Guard for?
