Three years ago, Jeff Gray, the principal at Foust Elementary School in Owensboro, Ky., realized that his school needed help—and fast. Test scores at Foust were the worst in the county and the students, particularly the boys, were falling far behind. So Gray took a controversial course for educators on brain development, then revamped the first- and second-grade curriculum. The biggest change: he divided the classes by gender.

No, some of us would just like them to shut their little traps while we are trying to teach, and stay in their seats during tests, not constantly annoy their classmates, and...well you get the idea.

I have to admit that I went to an all girls' private school, the headmistress of which is quoted in one of this article.
Girls and boys learn differently. By being separated from boys, girls can concentrate on learning, on leading (in clubs etc.) and don't have worry about what Tommy will think if she answers the question. They are allowed to grow independently (and they get into less trouble sexually). I'm all for it.

Some may argue that there is too much of a difference between public and private schools. I'm still trying to figure out why public schools can't challenge their students as the private schools do. It's not all money; look at how expensive our school taxes are.
Swap "girls" for "boys" in the above paragraph, and it's also true.
Actually, it would be MORE of an improvement for boys, as the "ed-biz" these days is turning into more and more of a "woman-dominated" environment, and women think "natural boy behavior" is "bad" or a result of ADHD, and drug the poor little males into a stupor.
Why does a 10 yo have a phone? My 8th graders don't. The school has plenty of free phones they can use.
Last place I taught didn't even allow high schoolers to have cell phones. We didn't actively look for them, but if one went off in class, or we caught them using the cell phone, we took it away and mom or dad had to come down and pay 15$ to get it back. Ticked off alot of parents, but you're right, there are phones all over the schools.

I'm glad to see this concept rising. School is not about 'social skills'.
At least in our school they have to keep them off. I guess it's something. My twins are two of the three boys out of fourty-two in the eighth grade without phones. No video games, either. Man, we are SO MEAN.

Exactly. I am always hoping that my son will have a male teacher, because they understand his never-ending energy and ideas. We refused to go the drug route, and I've never regretted it. What kind of a message do we send when we start drugging our children in kindergarten, and what kind of a life will they have when adults? It will be interesting to see the "studies" in three decades, when all these children become drug-dependent through life.

I'm a female teacher, but I raised 3 boys before I started teaching, so I understand boys better than girls. And, for the most part, I hated when the kids were on meds. Most of them were lethargic and kind of spaced out. I would rather just deal with them. Of course, I can be kinda mean when I need to be..... :)
