"You dog/cat people sitting back home in your air condition intact houses are more flipped over a homeless animal than a now homeless family who lost all worldly possessions in the storm of the century" And some of us have seen some of the people who were left homeless grieving terribly over pets who had to be left behind. For some of these folks, reunion with a beloved pet could give them something to help them carry on. Nothing is gained by destroying these helpless animals. It isn't as if their rescue is taking priority over the rescue of humans. I think this b*st*rd probably just likes killing things.

The fact is, though, that animals that have been tended their whole lives, when sent out on their own, are prone to starvation, predation, and disease. Much like some of the human residents of NOLA, I guess. It's a pretty dangerous situation, because some of them will no doubt acquire a taste for two-year-olds.

Thanks for posting this. I was about to post the URL for Mike Gallagher's website. He has a PayPal link for donations to Noah's Wish & will go to Slidell to help them in their rescue efforts.

What in the heck do you mean animals can't think? That is pathetic in itself, you must not have had a very close bond with animals or your level of intelligence is questionable.

For those people who had to make the choice of the getting out without their pets, I wouldn't have left my animals either. They are my family.
I think this is the perfect opportunity to discuss the importance of spaying and neutering pets. So far all we hear about are the animals that are loved and cared for. What about the homeless ones that once ran those streets? If people would help eliminate the tremendous pet overpopulation more than half of the dead ones there wouldn't have had to suffer so needlessly.
There were a lot of people who had a choice to leave; the animals didn't get that as an option. I think helping them only helps the people whose pets they are. It is proven that animals help us. I have no doubt there are some people who wanted to give up but didn't because of their animals. For me when I feel over-whelmed and frustrated all I need to do is scratch him behind the ear and I feel so much better. It makes me sick to drive around my own town and see the homeless animals. It makes me even sicker to know that the fate of the majority of the animals in the Gulf could have been averted completely.
If people not only realized they have a responsibility for the animals in their lives and actually acted on it and did something instead of saying there is nothing they can do these kinds of events would have fewer casualties. Saying that it is too expensive to have them fixed is an unacceptable answer. There are local groups who need donations of items i.e. blankets and food and that also need money. They help with low cost spaying and neutering of pets. Katrina has only magnified the issue of animals in shelters, animals on the streets and the fact they all need help.
For the sheriff that has chosen to shoot these helpless creatures, may God have mercy on your soul.

The downside of free roaming feral animals ferrageing for food in a disaster huge disaster area is not to be ignored. Hard choices are called for, that are more humane than slow death by starvation.

Well SquirrelGirl, I was with you up to the point of saying that the sheriff who is doing this needs to be concerned about his soul. I don't think you are dealing with reality there.
He is doing what needs to be done. What difference does it make if he shoots the animals, or they are put down in a shelter?
