CNN Headline news reporter just stated that the military will not force folks from their homes. "Refusing to force Americans from their homes", said the noticeably British reporter. Further, they will not let residents deteriorate in their own homes. The military will continue to get water and food to those remaining in New Orleans, effectively undermining Nagin's mandatory evacuation order.
You made me think about what would happen if there was a catastrophe in the other blue spots on the red map...........
I disagree. If we can spend billions of dollars on the evacuees, we can spend a few dollars on the people who choose not to leave. The military already said they will supply food and water to the people who want to stay. If they are willing to take the risk of sickness, then let them. Doctors have been saying the disease thing has been overhyped anyway. I am quoting a DR. now so don't yell at me about it.
There are probably 12 agencies that can bulldoze their homes because they aren't fit to live in. Then you will hear the "land grab by the rich" charge again. With water up to the roof line for a week or more, they may fall down before the water is pumped out.
The looters and gangs and mentally ill also dont want to evacuate. And the semi-independent homesteaders get in the way of removing them.
I think people have to be able to stay, if they want to. They must be told they are on their own. Otherwise you have the military forcibly dragging them out; that cannot be, in a democracy. I thought the liberals were for 'choice.' But they want federal/mandatory this and that, after the fact? I don't see how it will work.
"As to the toilet situation there, grab a bucket, walk outside to the flood waters, fill bucket, return to the Dome's toilets, pour bucket of water in to flush. Good grief people, can't we do anything for ourselves anymore?"
"We"? LOL. Yes, we can. They can't.
They knew nothing about organization, leadership, etc., etc., etc. Sad commentary that America tolerates, and condones this mindlessness. Don't anyone say that we don't. We just did. And we're paying out the yingyang for that very mindlessness. As a Freeper just said,
"It's a day late and a dollar short. OK, 20 days late and $1B short."
Yeah, I thought the feds did pretty good. I realized they couldn't go in immediately, that there had to be some sort of assessment and logistical planning before they could.
But people gotta have water. You can live without food, you can live without shelter, but you gotta have water, especially in the south in the summer. Even a day without water and bad things start to happen. Bad things.
And this PC culture that doesn't shoot looters is going to get us ALL killed one day. My only satisfaction is it will get them killed too.
Thats the spirit. We need the government money for the evacuees. They haven't had enough help yet.
Good move!
OK I messed up. We don't want another precedent BESIDES that Cuban kid.
Sewers backed up into dome. No flushing there. I would have said poop in bucket, take to water, dump, rinse, repeat.
It's one thing if someone needs to be rescued and/or needs temporary arrangements for food and shelter. But using the U.S. military to replace the local grocery store on a long-term basis is a bad idea.
.......or "shopping" at WalMart.........or hightailing it somewhere, anywhere but the city they were sworn to protect........
Maybe this will finally cause the governor to cede authority and the news media will quit blaming it all on Bush when they can't help but point out she has not done so.
'ZONE' = Thanks!
I agree with you 100% -- as long as "their own choices" do not include an expectation that someone else is going to airlift food and water to them for the next three months.
bump ... guess nagin wants the republicans out of the city as well.
It's called Posse Comitatus. The military are not in the law enforcement business.
I'm a little worried now about all the medication they have us on. I'm on some stuff myself that will cause some unpleasant effects if I'm cut off, and if we have a cataclysm where I live, that might just happen. It's not good. I think we need to start weaning ourselves off of a lot of things. And slowly, very slowly, I think we are. Not a lot, but our attitudes are changing. For one thing, I see that people want to stay close to home these days. The zeal for travel is gone. The rest of the world resents us and, we don't have much use for them either.
