CNN Headline news reporter just stated that the military will not force folks from their homes. "Refusing to force Americans from their homes", said the noticeably British reporter. Further, they will not let residents deteriorate in their own homes. The military will continue to get water and food to those remaining in New Orleans, effectively undermining Nagin's mandatory evacuation order.
I think the Mayor has done quite enough to these poor souls.
The only thing he's in charge of is a microphone.
Blank? No way! Those pages are filled with schemes and cons and ideas to get their hands on some of the money to rebuild NO.
ROFL!
....that's because the GOVERNOR will not authorize military troops to take over the responsibility...there is a rift between the mayor of New Orleans and the Governor...and of course, it's all Bush's fault.
Oh, ok. How about coming and going? Are they able to check on their property?
At this point, only Blanco can order the Louisiana National Guard to "forcibly remove" people.
If 40% of NO is dry, what would be the reason to force the residents out that aren't in sewer water?
I don't think the military have the power to remove folks. I don't believe they have police powers, just protection powers.
Yesterday, a reporter showed a brief interview of one lady who refused to leave. Her home was partially under water.
Later that day or the next, reporter saw that same lady at a shelter and asked her about her earlier refusal.
She said, she thought about it and realized it would be a long time (up to 8 weeks) without water, food, electric, etc. So she decided she would be better off leaving.
Many will be forced out for similar reasons in the coming days.
These people should be allowed to stay if they want. But they should sign a waiver of some sort relieving the government of any responsibility for their welfare.
NO has always been murder capital USA. I wonder how many 'missing' people's bodies will wash up.
I don't believe Nagin has that authority. I am not sure the troops are supposed to even have weapons there. I am glad they do, but I read somewhere that in the aftermath of Andrew the Florida gov. refused to sign over control and that when the troops arrived they had to send all of their weapons back to the armory. Troops were only allowed to help with humanitarian issues.
I had mewzilla's post 16 in my head. This is why I don't blame the people for not wanting to leave.
He is an ass. Good for the military. I wondered if they would have to obey this absurd order. For which, what IS the point? It's a day late and a dollar short. OK, 20 days late and $1B short.
Zactly!
You would think this idiot would try and save face. Get out on Sean Penn's boat and look for people and demand they evucate. This so called mayor is so full of himself he doesn't care.
Wonder how many actually owned homes and how many are rentals.
The only thing they can't do is arrest people.
They can't arrest them per se, but the troops can detain them, tie 'em up with zip cuffs, and hold them until police or whoever actually arrives to read them their rights, etc., and actually arrest them.
