Poll: Bush Not Taking Brunt of Katrina Criticism
ABC NEWS ^ | 09/04/05 | GARY LANGER

Sept. 4, 2005 — Americans are broadly critical of government preparedness in the Hurricane Katrina disaster — but far fewer take George W. Bush personally to task for the problems, and public anger about the response is less widespread than some critics would suggest.

Sampling, data collection and tabulation for this poll were done by TNS.

In an event that clearly has gripped the nation — 91 percent of Americans are paying close attention — hopefulness far outweighs discontent about the slow-starting rescue. And as in so many politically charged issues in this country, partisanship holds great sway in views of the president's performance.

The most critical views cross jurisdictions: Two-thirds in this ABC News/Washington Post poll say the federal government should have been better prepared to deal with a storm this size, and three-quarters say state and local governments in the affected areas likewise were insufficiently prepared.

Chertoff was asked on Fox this morning if Blanco had screwed up..He declined to answer the question, saying that conversations had to be private..

I saw that too. Chertoff was being diplomatic but anyone paying reasonable attention got the drift. Blanco was useless and had collapsed in incompretence. The feds had to take over for her.

That was exactly the right way to answer that question. Since he did not immediately defend Blanco, the viewer is left with the impression that he does think she screwed up but Chertoff is too classy to say so in public. Much better way to focus the blame where it belongs without looking like partisan finger-pointing, which the classless 'Rats are flooding America with.

I have a friend who is normally very critical of the current administration. We were talking about the disaster in NO last night. I told him some of the facts, including the info about the buses. His eyes got big and he said, "Really? Wow!" I think that we can do a lot to defend the administration in this situation - you know, the talk around the water cooler and coffee machine-kind of talk?" We did a lot in the last election - I talk to lots of people during the week. Information, information, information. Doesn't seem like to helps much, but if each one of us talks to 1-2 people a day, everyday, and sets them straight and they talk to 1-2 people and convey that info, well, I think it's called a grass-roots effort.
Remember the movie, "Pay It Forward?" Let's just get busy.

Before the hurricane hit, GWB was on a number of times asking the people of NO to evacuate. I am trying to remember whether I have ever heard a President do this before. Anyone? Many times I have heard Jeb and other Governors inform and instruct the people of their state, but offhand I can't remember when a President did.

FWIW, I think it's telling that she didn't make ONE appearance on any ofthe Sunday shows..it didn't even have to be an interview..she could have spoken for a few minutes, then left..MY climbing out on a limb prediction..KBB will NOT run again, Landrieu will run for governor..

You can bet that ABC tried to skew and rig that poll so it made GW Bush look terrible. You can also bet that a majority of Americans, that vote approve of the way GW Bush has handled this terrible tragedy.
>

That is the key point. This might have been a poll of adults. It is not registered or likely voters. Add 5% of Bush's numbers.

They have nothing. They have nothing at all. They need to just keep going to work and paying taxes so GW Bush can take their money and spend it on his priorities.

Sometimes defending yourself can make you look guilty.
I gave my Downs Syndrome baby, Rachel, up for adoption in 1988. I went on a local San Francisco talk show "People Are Talking" to discuss special needs adoption. On the panel was my adoptive mother, Stephanie, and two other mothers who had chosen to raise their Down Syndrome children. Before I went on I was scared. I knew someone would attack me. I just remembered Jesus and how he always spoke the truth with love, without being defensive. Well, a caller called into the show and was really angry at me, accusing me of being a horrible person, etc. I thought my heart was going to burst. I said, "Ma'am, I agree with you, I just couldn't do it." And then the other three women on the panel started to defend me. It was perfect. The caller was speechless. My goal was to let people know that adoption is a beautiful option - I don't believe in abortion. We, the people, who support President Bush, are his best defense.

That's why Timmy Russert was hysterical in his berating of Chertoff this A.M. He actually blamed him for not taking over the evac personally and not using CRUISE SHIPS!!!

Re. the picture of the guy with the beer in his trunk: This morning at mass, our African-American deacon explained that he was at first enraged when he saw that photo because he thought the guy was grossly irresponsible and predatory. But then he realized that he might well have been taking the beer to needy people who had nothing else to drink. Thus, we should never judge. (I am NOT making this up!)

I talked to MY two, yesterday. I went on a hike for an MD Fundraiser with a friend who has MD. (It took us 4 hours to go 6 miles, but he did it!) Two of the women walking with us were Bush-basing about Katrina, and I did EXACTLY as you did, explaining about how it was the State's responsibility to have evacuated all the people it could have, the parking lots FILLED with flooded, unused school buses, etc.

They, too, were amazed at this information, as everything they knew about the hurricane came from their daily spoon feedings by the MSM.

It does work, People! You may not convert hard leftists in your converstaions as they're too out of touch with reality to begin with, but just presenting people with the FACTS results in some pretty amazing conversations with the saner opposition. :)

I hope somebody knows how to ping Rush, Drudge and Brit Hume. I'm sure the WaPo and ABC News will try to bury the results.

The MSM ( led by the Times) have been sabotaging the Bush administration with their prosecutorial and lynch-type reporting of the crisis in NO and portrayal of an imaginary crisis in the White House. But we know who or what is to blame for the lawlessness and turmoil in Biloxi...I mean, New Orleans...and the answer is not politically correct but accurate.

"The Dems can not multi-task..."

I would not be quite so dogmatic about that. The Clintons and the media are very good at bait and switch. If they can confuse the public badly enough, they may benefit politically from any anti-Bush or anti-Republican fallout that occurs. But even if the public gets it right and assigns the blame to the Mayor and the Governor, it still serves as a distraction to take public interest off of Able Danger where there may be enough skeletons to bury Hillary's Presidential aspirations forever.
