WILLIAM H. REHNQUIST was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on October 1, 1924. He served in World War II with the Army Air Corps. When the War ended, Rehnquist entered Stanford University and was graduated in 1948 with both an undergraduate and a master’s degree. He earned a second master’s degree from Harvard University in 1950 before enrolling in Stanford University Law School. After graduation from Stanford Law School in 1952, Rehnquist served as law clerk to Supreme Court Associate Justice Robert H. Jackson for the 1952-1953 Term. Rehnquist settled in Phoenix, Arizona, the following year and engaged in the practice of law for sixteen years until 1969, when President Richard M. Nixon appointed him Assistant Attorney general for the Office of Legal Counsel in the Department of Justice. On October 21, 1971, President Nixon nominated Rehnquist as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. The Senate confirmed the appointment on December 10, 1971. After serving for fifteen years as an Associate Justice, President Ronald Regan nominated him Chief Justice of the United States on June 17, 1986. The Senate confirmed the appointment on September 17, 1986.

Bush is a racist because a black mayor and a white Democrat ignored his warning to evacuate their citizens and screwed up control of the aftermath.

Roberts is a racist because he penned "war between the states".

Rehnquist is a racist. Thomas is a racist. He's not really black you know...

The REAL racists are the Democrats and the race baiters like Sharpton, like jesse and I've heard enough from ALL of them.

Must be getting tired, I am repeating myself. I almost feel like I am on a roof in Margaritaville without my lost jigger of salt.

I have bouts of insomnia and there are nights I can't find anything but something even worse than C to C. At least it comes in clear and if I happen to fall asleep the BZZZZ FZZZZ doesn't wake me. I miss old Steve that used to be on WABC. I swear Noory is out to get the DUmmies after Airhead America signs off.

"I thought Laz was the new Pope? :)

Can Laz be Pope and Chief Justice at the same time. We'll have to check the Constitution."

I understand Laz. is really only the force behind the new Pope; he's pulling the strings so to speak. I think he can work this Chief Justice thing in fine.

When anyone is nominated directly as Chief Justice, rather than being an Associate Justice first, there is only one Senate hearing. However, the rare few who have been nominated directly as Chief have usually held some substantial position prior to that.

Think William Howard Taft, who was named Chief after he had served as President of the US. Judge Roberts doesn't have the horsepower to be named directly as Chief. So my answer to your question is purely theoretical. IF Bush decided to nominate Roberts for Chief, he would withdraw the current nomination as Associate, and replace it with one for Chief. Then, the hearings would proceed as scheduled.

Rest in well deserved peace.

I second that. I am so happy he was at work, in his office, three weeks ago. He wanted his lifetime appointment and he finished it with his boots on.
