At one point Friday, the evacuation was interrupted briefly when school buses rolled up so some 700 guests and employees from the Hyatt Hotel could move to the head of the evacuation line much to the amazement of those who had been crammed in the stinking Superdome since last Sunday.
"How does this work? They (are) clean, they are dry, they get out ahead of us?" exclaimed Howard Blue, 22, who tried to get in their line. The National Guard blocked him as other guardsmen helped the well-dressed guests with their luggage.
The 700 had been trapped in the hotel, next to the Superdome, but conditions were considerably cleaner, even without running water, than the unsanitary crush inside the dome. The Hyatt was severely damaged by the storm. Every pane of glass on the riverside wall was blown out.

As it stands now, it's taking forever to get them out of the Dome & the convention center. Which quickly became cesspools of the worst kind.
Were these the 'friends of the Mayor' that Shepherd Smith talked about last night? He said the mayor made sure his friends were taken care of and to heck with the poor folk.
"I find that if you dig beyond the superficial story the liberal conspiracies tend to go away."
According to a British publication, the white tourists in the Superdome were being harrassed and attacked because of their skin color. They were moved to the Hyatt for safety reasons. The Mayor made sure they were able to get out. They had hired buses earlier and paid for them but FEMA took those buses. I really can't blame the Mayor on this one. Tourists should be a priority not because they are an important part of the economy but because they are guests in this country.
There is so much information coming out so I want to put out that I'm not sure if those the Mayor got out were tourists. I assume they were because I know they were placed in a hotel and I believe it was the Hyatt.
I understand Pat Robertsons "Operation Blessing" has been trucking convoys of food, water , medicine into the affected area, that sorry, good-for-nothing. I wonder what the NAACP and Rainbow Coalition have been up to. I wonder if they match Roberson bean can for bean can.
Argue your position for state-control of prices on a more apt thread please.
Murder and Mayhem in New Orlean's Miserable Shelter: Lessons from the Dome
Valenti and her husband, two of very few white people in the almost exclusively black refugee camp, said she and other whites were threatened with murder on Thursday.I grew up in mostly-minority areas. I find it amusing on some days, how some people are quick to proclaim others "ignorant" and "racist" for accurately describing behavior observed first-hand"They hated us. Four young black men told us the buses were going to come last night and pick up the elderly so they were going to kill us," she said, sobbing. "They were plotting to murder us and then they sent the buses away because we would all be killed if the buses came -- that's what the people in charge told us this morning."
Other survivors recounted horrific cases of sexual assault and murder.
I also notice you tend to devolve into ad-hominem attacks on peoples' spelling errors when your arguments are contradicted
More Leftist drivel. Do these people do anything besides drool and shout? If Leftists were paid what they're worth they'd be pushing mops and slinging fries. No wonder they love Karl Marx so much.
You signed up to FR just to give us your all-important wisdom of accusing the N.O. mayor of taking bribes, a man who gave up a high-paying job in Cox Communications to become mayor? What a putz you are.
These millions are the first generation to come of age believing it's OK to shred a baby to death after chosing to have sex but not wanting the consequence of sex.
It's no big leap from killin a baby that's inconvenient to killing you or me because they want our money or stuff, or want to force us to do something or whatever.
Oh brother, I never mentioned anything about state controlled pricing.
Seems like I've seen magazine extension kits for about $30.
Of course we can justify it. Getting tourists out frees up resources for those left behind. They can leave the city and go HOME, while the others need to be dealt with, as they have no home.
If there are 10,000 refugees and 2,000 can be sent home, leaving only 8,000 refugees, why wouldn't you allow those 2,000 to go home right away?
It's one of the only correct decisions made by the local authorities in this whole sorry situation. I don't think it has anything to do with race, money or public relations, it just makes sense!
"I would assume the 700 are short termers. Once they get out, they go home. The superdomers, they're stuck."
All the more reason to make the 700 wait in line. They were going back to the comfort of home anyway. In the Bible there is a verse about "abstaining from THE VERY APPEARANCE of evil" If people are saying this is not a race or class thing, they sure messed up on that one.
bttt
A complaint about price-gouging is a call for state-controls on prices.
"Imagine being caught off guard. You weren't staying at the Hyatt. You had on your old clothes. You were tired, wet, dirty, in need of a shave and a bath. Maybe you lost your wallet, cash, credit cards. So they didn't realize that you really ought to be one of the priveleged few!
Anybody beginning to feel resentful???"
Nope. I only resent the ingrates who complain about their lot yet do nothing about it.
"Congradulations on stupidest post of the year. Those people leaving the games are getting into their cars and driving home. These people have no cars and they have no homes. Where the hell are they supposed to go? Idiot."
Excuse me, Sir, but you are the idiot in claiming it cant be done. The mayor and Governor knew since Monday that New Orleans would be uninhabitable for the next six weeks. They knew then the superdome was overcrowded and not a suitable long-term housing venue. They could have and should have comandeered school buses from the neighboring region from the towns and cities that, unlike New Orleans, had the foresight not to let them get waterlogged. They could have and should have moved them to other cities, army bases, etc., which have opened their doors to them. There were and are places for them to go. Beyond that, there have been thousands of others trapped in N.O. with no way out, simply because obvious measures to bring transport in werent taken.
This operation could have moved 25,000 people out in a day. Your feeble claims that something this obvious is impossible is simply covering up the incompetent behavior of the local government. Lo and behond, now that order is restored, the evacuation has happened at a much faster pace.
The Black 'Rat Mayor Nagin sure did. But I for one think getting the trapped tourists out of the way, is an expedient way of alleviating the problems, since the biggest question is where to shelter a million people for several months or years. The faster the list can shrink the better. No evil there.
