Valenti and her husband, two of very few white people in the almost exclusively black refugee camp, said she and other whites were threatened with murder on Thursday.
"They hated us. Four young black men told us the buses were going to come last night and pick up the elderly so they were going to kill us," she said, sobbing. "They were plotting to murder us and then they sent the buses away because we would all be killed if the buses came -- that's what the people in charge told us this morning."
Other survivors recounted horrific cases of sexual assault and murder.
Sitting with her daughter and other relatives, Trolkyn Joseph, 37, said men had wandered the cavernous convention center in recent nights raping and murdering children.
She said she found a dead 14-year old girl at 5 a.m. on Friday morning, four hours after the young girl went missing from her parents inside the convention center.
"She was raped for four hours until she was dead," Joseph said through tears. "Another child, a seven-year old boy was found raped and murdered in the kitchen freezer last night."

The locals even in 3rd world Indonesia took personally care of criminal elements after the tsunami. It's hard to believe that large parts of the US have descended below the developing world.

Very few public officials are going to criticize Nagin (a black mayor) or Blanco (a female governor). That's just the way of things nowadays. But absence of comment by public officials doesn't blind the thinking populace. We see what happened and where the preponderance of blame lies.
New Orleans isn't a "large" part of the US.
Yes there are other cities that would have behaved similarly but there are many more that would not.
It's not the country that is decadent.

Some time back, this country shifted from "Crime Deterrence" to "Crime Prevention"
"Deterrence" says "If you harm person or property, we will catch you, and you will be PUNISHED -- so you better watch yourself"
"Prevention" says "It's our job to stop you from harming person or property, and if we fail, then we might catch you, and we might fight through all the legal loopholes and ad-hoc made-up 'rights' and plea-bargains to actually convict you -- in which case you get to spend some time in a situation which is probably not as bad as your life on the streets. But it's really our fault that we didn't prevent you, so we're sorry."
Yet another "Liberal Truth" that has turned out to be just not so.
This paragraph seems awfully out of character for our servicemen. And why would a National Guardsman say go to Iraq? Does the Guardsman think first of dead bodies when he thinks of Iraq? While it is possible he took that shot at the Iraq war, I know the character of the military and their knee jerk reaction to Iraq is not death. It is the freeing of millions of people from tyranny. They are proud to serve their country. Am I just being to analytical?
This is the new hate...the hate that dare not speak its name. I wonder how long it will take our country to condemn it openly without qualification...the way we condemned the KKK, jim crow? I think it will be a while......which will only make things much, much worse.
(one a side note, I wonder how many other major cities are this unprepared for a catastrophy, especially ones of economic, strategic importance?)
There were more than enough men to take out whatever roving gangs there were. Pathetic.

They should have formed a citizens militia, with the few police DEPUTIZING every able bodied male to form groups, go though the crowd, letting criminals know they would be OPPOSED!!!
A story of a black woman photographed in the company of looters labeled a looter next to a photo of a white woman witnessed collecting things floating by not called a looter is plastered over every newspaper as a national embarrassment.
But have a 14 year old girl and a 7 year old boy raped to death for 4 hours by angry blacks in government camps, and there’s no mention of their race.
Liberty Ship has nailed it. Stay armed. If you think we live in a civilized country, you need to look reality in the face.
It happened elsewhere, people bringing guns into another shelter were repeatedly surrounded until they left.
Probably because he's seen a lot of dead bodies there and that's what comes to mind for him when one talks about dead bodies.
