NEW ORLEANS — The situation in New Orleans was nearing rock bottom Friday as thousands of National Guardsmen armed with food, water and weapons streamed into the hurricane-ravaged city to bring relief to the suffering multitudes and take back the streets from the looters and armed vigilantes.

I don't care for Kelly or Bloomberg, but I think that they would dispatch extra units to the outer boroughs really quick. Every cop still sleeping at home in Goshen, Pearl River, or Commack would be given orders to come in or face the rest of their career writing parking tickets on Staten Island. I also believe that Pataki, or even Spitzer were he to be governor, would have the National Guard there, pronto. New Yorkers have their faults, but they would never elect a Governor Blanco.

BTW: When the (admittedly small) Harlem Riot occurred in 1964 or '65 (can't remember), the NYPD decided to do a "baton charge" all in a line. Of course the looters simply got out of the way and ran through the side streets, breaking windows along the way.

How does the crisis "worsen" by federal help arriving???

That's what I'm trying to figure out...

The situation will start improving, and the whiners won't have anything to bitch about.

Not true. Ivan devastated Pensacola, it's beaches and surrounding areas. There were a few incidents of isolated looting but nothing even close to the magnitude seen in Nawlins.

We are looking at a city largely composed of the dregs of society. This is what happens when opportunity knocks.

Kelly's good. So was Bratton. And that other guy, can't remember his name, who never made PC, but knew technology and was a good cop. Actually, I think he ended up in NO, if memory serves.

I see the NYPD having a couple of landmarks in the 20th century. Knapp/Serpico was one, and then the Kelly/Bratton years was another.

You are singing the DU Mantra. Those people are so pathologically demented they all need to be closely studied.....cold.

I'm not defending the cops, but I would like to add something. Many of these cops had to make a choice between staying on the job or seeing to the safety of their own families. It's a tough choice.

That would be Jack Maple, who, I believe, passed away not too long ago.

You need to visit Dallas, Houston, Phoenix, etc. and you'll see what I mean. Already, there's places in those cities that you would not to wander into.....it's a good bet you won't come out. I doubt Pensacola ranks very high on the list of most populated cities anyway.

Your comment brought to mind one of my favorite Ronald Reagan quotes:

"The nine most terrifying words in the English language are: 'I'm from the government and I'm here to help.'"

"I don't who to blame or even if there is anyone to blame. But this will hurt Bush...and Republicans for a long time."

Thanks for confirming what a numbskull you are. The next time a (bigger) catastrophe hitsseveral states in America at once we'll be sure to put YOU in charge of Search and Rescue efforts, since you seem to have all the answers at your keyboard finger tips.

LOL!

Sad, though that local authorities let the situation get so bad that the only way to help those people was by armed military convoy.

I missed that one, do you have an URL to it? I saw the video of the cops looting walmart, that was real nice. http://www.zippyvideos.com/8911023771013466/countdown-looting-in-walmart/

I just can't get over why Bush and Cheney, with Halliburton's assistance have not totally rebuilt the dome, the city, pumped the water out, .....

Rumor has it that there's oil under the city, and they needed to relocate the people so they could drill.

Is that why Bush, Cheney, et. al. seeded the clouds, directed the storm path, received global financing from the international cabal of Jewish bankers? All part of the International Zionist Conspiracy. Now it all makes sense.

/sarcasm

I agree..take back the city. Due to the coverage on Katrina, no news on our earthquake swarms here in SoCal. Hundreds of quakes in the south Salton Sea area over the last week. From 1.2 to 4.4 in the Richter scale. I hope it is just some burping going on. I try not to think of the worst. Be prepared is the best.

Blanco is governor because she swamped Jindal in New Orleans in the November 2003 election (statewide the margin was 52% to 48% in her favor).
