NEW ORLEANS The situation in New Orleans was nearing rock bottom Friday as thousands of National Guardsmen armed with food, water and weapons streamed into the hurricane-ravaged city to bring relief to the suffering multitudes and take back the streets from the looters and armed vigilantes.

oh and one other thing...
this disaster is spread over 90,000 sq. miles...with roads, rails, communication, ports, etc. down. when that is lost, it is a bit hard to help...
oh, and let's not forget that some of the NOPD were in on hte looting...
I know I shouldn't go to DU, but my sister is a hard-core AIDS activist leftist, while my other sister and I are mildly political and conservative. We never discuss politics with her, yet she constantly pushes "America is a failure, America is evil," in our faces. We try not to alienate her because she is our sister...but her thinking is so like that of most DUers I tend to visit there to understand her and how I could gently approach her about her madness. I learned from DU she is a loony loon. You're right, I'll stop visiting there
This IDIOT Governor of theirs is so stupid that I cannot believe they actually elected her and that Dumb-Arse Mayor. The people of Louisiana can really be proud of their leaders and their magnificent leadersip........
The looting will stop when there is nothing left to steal....
There will be no/no shooting of non-whites on TV......
"We are dealing with a different class of people". THAT IS THE REASON NEW ORLEANS is falling apart. The Mayor and governor including Al Sharpton, Black Cacacus and other are quick to blame (because we're black, because we are poor, on and on ). These people have always been dependent on someone else to do everything for them, and when they don't get their way they kill, loot and blame.
I really wonder why the government didn't just take over the state immediately, It's apparent that the city and the state hadn't prepared for any serious emergency.
It is true that we are dealing with a different class of people. Now I know that's not politically correct but that's just the way I see it.
One doesn't start looting in one day, this has been going on for years, in good times the looters pray on homes of decent people at night, then when law and order break down they get brave enough to take down business in the light of day and of course in the light of day the cameria can catch them.
The looting is not just in New Orleans.
People are already trying the same door to door and phone "donation" scams that have been run in previous disasters.
What are you talking about? NYC has every class of people.
That's what I'm trying to figure out...
Looting doesn't just start in one day, this has been going on for years, in good times looters speed "when no one is watching" or "when everyone else is doing it". They may download/copy albums or sneak into a second movie at the theater.
I KNOW somebody here will correct me if I am wrong, but the State of Louisiana passed a law several years ago authorizing deadly force by civilians for Car Jacking.
I think it's safe to say that in LA it is a certainty deadly force to protect property is legal.
Do you really, really think that would help? Citizens killing other citizens? Honestly? I know the press overplays the negative, but I have to say I am shocked at how incompetant this whole rescue mission has been. I don't who to blame or even if there is anyone to blame. But this will hurt Bush...and Republicans for a long time.
You can't compare the two. EVERYONE in New Orleans was affected by the flood. The whole entire city and outside the city whereas 9/11 was downtown. It's just not a fair comparison.
"SHE is the one that must give the order to shoot to kill."
Yes and she is not expressly giving that order because if some looters get shot (Like they deserve) she can later say, "I NEVER gave that order!"
And it wouldn't be a lie.

I must have missed the part where she discussed the levees, pumps, evacutation, and storm shelters.
Memo to governor's office outlines partisan Internet site (Louisiana) (8/18/05 | Associated Press)
A confidential memo addressed to Gov. Kathleen Blanco's communications chief outlined a strategy for developing an anonymous Web site that would espouse the politics and positions of Louisiana's top Democrats, according to copies of the four-page document circulated Thursday. The proposed Web site would be used to counterbalance Republican messages becoming more organized and prevalent around Louisiana, according to the memo, which is addressed from John Copes to Bob Mann, a friend of Copes' and Blanco's communications director.
"Currently, Democrats have no comparable structure from which to return fire, or even to begin correcting the calumnies hurled against us daily," Copes says in the document, sent to The Associated Press via e-mail and posted on several conservative Web sites.
Mann, who confirmed that Copes wrote the memo, refused to comment on it, beyond saying that he often receives suggestions and advice from people. Copes also declined to talk about the four-page document...
"One thought is to try to masquerade as some sort of anonymous non-partisan do-gooder group. That just won't pass the smell test, especially after two or three months of consistently talking smack about Republicans and talking sweet about Democratic policy and never whacking a Democrat," Copes says. "The point is, we're going to have to come up with some kind of story about who's doing the site and why."
Louisiana ex-governor appealing conviction (Tuesday, July 6, 2004 )
FORT WORTH, Texas -- Edwin Edwards(D), serving a 10-year sentence for racketeering, extortion and fraud in a federal penitentiary here, still makes news back in Louisiana. And if attorneys for the man often called "Fast Eddie" prevail in an unusual appeal now pending, he could be back in the Bayou State long before that time is served. The 76-year-old who charmed his way into the Louisiana governor's mansion four times before being convicted for racketeering, money laundering and conspiracy spends his time quietly in federal prison here. But back in Louisiana, many are poised, eagerly awaiting a federal judge's ruling. That ruling likely will be either to uphold Edwards' 2000 conviction or overturn it and grant a new trial. A third possibility is that the court could order an evidentiary hearing to rule on several Edwards' appeal points.

Not Quite Bubba vs. Bubba: Louisiana Governor's Contest Defies Stereotypes (11/14/03)
"...perhaps the ACLU will file some lawsuits..."
SHOOT the looters.
If the ACLU doesn't like it....
SHOOT the ACLU!
The mayor keeps blaming the president but HE has:
1. Failed to set up command and control center
2. Not helped bus people out of town BEFORE the hurricane
Instead of blaming and complaining try DOING SOMETHING. Democrats are emotional talkiers. Leaders get things done.
