Nobody should be condemned to die of dehydration because they made a dumb mistake. Not if something can be done about it.

The "coulda, shoulda" game is for later.

You are correct, but the same people should not be crying that they did not get a "hot" meal...

There is absolutely no doubt that the Gov of LA and the Mayor of NO are completely incompetent.. not suprising since the entire government of LA is corrupt beyond belief, and NO is even before the hurricane a corrupt and high crime city.

And they've failed, imo. I think the president thinks they have failed too.

All plans are perfect until the battle (hard work) begins! Haley Barber describe this best, "The damage is equivalant to several Hirosema bombs!" If there is another failure, it is your failure to comprehend the scope of this disaster.

I agree with that and whenever I see emergency kits listed that don't include guns, I tell people to have one.

He is the most negative person on FR, I wonder how this human goes with his life everyday with such a miserable attitude toward everything?

Dont_Tread_On_Me_888: Man you really need medical help. Your negative attitude is not normal at all.

"Sometimes it sucks to be the guy in charge, but I am glad it is President Bush stepping up to the plate, instead of President Kerry."

I will listen attentively when, later on with the benefit of 20/10 hindsite, Kerry or ANY dem shill steps up to the plate and states what THEY would have done. They will merely say they had a plan!

Bwahahaha

>>>It allows the Feds to maintain law...but can only be issued if the Gov or state legislature asks for it, or if the President feels that the state government is unable or unwilling to accomplish the task at hand and restore civil obedience.

I saw a thread 2 days ago that said the Incidence of National Significance was implemented and put the power under DHS.

I hope Bush goes to the Convention Center

He'd be safer on the streets of Baghdad.

An LSU professor who was on the panel that drew up the last plan said that there was NO PLAN for the evacuation of 100,000 poor, old, and infirm people who they knew would not be able to get out of the city by car before a catastrophic hurricane. He said every time that question came up it was met with silence.

Another expert said it would have taken a minimum of 72 hours to get all those people out of the city by bus. New Orleans would have had to start evacuating on Thursday, or Friday at the latest, putting the folks on buses. (Note: Katrina was still a Category 3 storm on Thursday.) And a large number of them would have been sick, and frial, and had babies and young children in tow, all needing extraordinary assistance wherever they were being taken.

I'm bumping your comments because this thread is moving so fast that some posters might not see it.

Yes, the local and state officials dropped the ball before the hurricane arrived.

Btw, I'm sorry if I'm being too harsh on FEMA, but I already dealt with those incompetent bureaucrats in 1992, and I'm still smarting at their sluggishness and absurdity. Similarly, our local and state officials also had the deer-in-the-headlights look for a while.

Exactly...if the SD was your only shelter, why wasn't it supplied ahead of time with provisions.

Why weren't buses sent up and down streets to evacuate those who couldn't leave the city because of lack of funds.

In Florida, I've witnessed amazing levels of preparedness in the event of a storm. Evacuations of invalids, older folks, whole communities moved by bus to higher ground and shelters, etc.

I think it all boils down to "they never thought it would happen to them."

I've read your posts... you seem to be the kind of person who likes flash and not substance. You want glib, hollywood scripted remarks with music swelling in the background while an eagle soars high overhead. This President is not that type of speaker. He never has been. He is honest and sincere... that's what comes through. The fate of the free world does not hinge on his remarks this morning. They perfectly acceptable and delivered in true Bush style.

Jeb Bartlett seems to be your type of leader... he can speak and all the above happen...Plus, the Dems would not dare criticize him.

Everyone please notice that news release last SATURDAY said that Katrina MAY develop into a Category 4 storm! Saturday!

It also declares a state of emergency and put out encouraging word that FEMA was prepared, working with local authorities, and that FEMA has the authority to coordinate all. As of Saturday.

It encouraged and URGED people to evacuate.

... this was the classic case of a late-developing storm and by the time it got bad enough that people knew they should leave it was too late.

I agree with that. There is always a matter of weighing odds.

My prayers are with those who are working to get the relief effort organized, and to give faith and physical strength and durability to those who are in need of relief.
