He's talking Convention Center, not SD. I've been following the story closely and yesterday was the first day I heard about the Convention Center.

There are so many fools on this thread I cannot believe it!!
NO leadership has been the problem since the very beginning. Bush had to TELL them to order the evacuation for crying outloud!! They stood up and TOLD people to get out but where were the buses then?? These people who have been depending on the government to take care of them are the ones demanding it now---YESTERDAY-- and they are the ones, many of whom chose to ignore the evacuation in the first place.
You want Bush to run the show and ignore the incompetent leadership down there?? It doesn't work that way!! The damn governor should be in charge and the POTUS answers HER call for help. He's doing that. For you all to think Mike Brown of FEMA should have known this and that: from who?? The damn locals that's who!! The feds can only go on the information they are given. The gov & mayor should have been directing that information and directing the food water drops from the beginning. They are the ones responsible for this failed plan and I am so sick of you people wanting Bush and FEMA to DO MORE.
That stinkin levee that broke was the very part that just recently was rebuilt. It was not about Bush cutting funding! Again--the governor and local leadership failed.
And for those saying the tsunami got help, blah blah blah...it took a few days as I recall and they're weren't pigs shooting at the rescuers!!
You want Bush to come before the cameras and play some stinkin PR game.
You all make me sick!!

I don't think anyone here is blaming Bush for the failure of local governments.
However, some of us are saying that he needs to realize that, given the failure of local and state government, it is now on the feds to take charge. And beyond that, the country as a whole wants to see him, personally, lead us through this disaster.
To: gingerky
So wake me up when the President works for FEMA, instead of the other way around. I swear, I think some of you folks think that Bush should be pumping your gas for you.

Five trucks can hold well over 50,000 MREs and many cases of bottled water. What, do you think FEMA is going to set up cafeterias and serve turkey and dressing to 50,000 people?

Yes............the black leaders are not out there with megaphones, calming the people they have ruined with their past victimization rhetoric.
Looks like they see a great reaping of what they have sown, here.
Why aren't they out there in NO encouraging integrity and asking them to help rather than cause the DEATHS of many who wait for evacuation but are hampered as evacuation personnel have had to abandon their jobs because of being SHOT AT!Why aren't they their handing out WATER and MOBILIZING the black community in America to get off their butts and get going?
If the PRESS can get there, SO CAN THEY!
Jesse Jackson DOES NOT HAVE THE COURAGE TO LEAD when he is needed most...must have something to due with the prospect of no lobster dinners available in NO right now. Or perhaps he is simply a coward.
Martin Luther KING would shame Jesse Jackson so badly, were he alive right now, it would make your head spin.
And where is the leader of the NAACP...where are are ALL of the so called black leaders who claim to speak for our black citizens.
What a GREAT BIG BUNCH OF COWARDS.

The president's emergency declaration authorizes the FEMA to coordinate all disaster relief efforts and to provide appropriate assistance in a number of Louisiana parishes, or counties.
That expresses "who is authorized to be in charge" of coordination of relief activities.
Sometimes it sucks to be the guy in charge, but I am glad it is President Bush stepping up to the plate, instead of President Kerry.

The helicopters can't get close enough to the ground to drop anything.......they're being fired upon. Why don't you volunteer to walk into that hellhole of a city.
That's not my job. That's the Guard's or military's job, since the NOPD deserted.
There's too much political correctness involved in this. Order has to be regained. If that means shooting some people, then shoot some people. Do it on nationwide television, and do it until these thugs get the message.
Then drop in an overwhelming presence. If they do nothing but walk around and talk to people, at least they'll stop the helplessness and hopelessness that pervades the place now.
Who's directing this effort? I don't think anybody is, frankly. There's lots of ad hoc reactions from FEMA. Nothing proactive. Nothing at all.

Can you give us YOUR PLAN so we can tell the NITWITS at FEMA what to do? I'm not blaming the FEMA troops. There are plenty of incredible, heroic efforts going on through both the public and private sectors. I salute and and am in awe of those heroes who doing this incredible rescue.
One the other hand, there is a functional road to New Orleans. On one end is the bounty of America. On the other end are thousands of people, most of whom are not thugs, standing on that same road. Apparently, in four days plus, no one in charge of FEMA has arranged to fill a few semis with water and food so they can drive a couple hours down the road (under heavy guard, if necessary). I would call those who can't do that nitwits.
My plan: fill some trucks up with food and water and drive them down the road and distribute those goods with the help of a well armed military.
President says the results are "unacceptable". I agree with him completely.
To: oldvike
Hopefully you're right. I want those thugs dealt with as quickly as possible. The whole world is watching us right now and, trust me, we are NOT looking good. In fact, we're downright weak.I agree. I think Congress was a bit slow to go back into session myself.

The images are coming in of young black men looting... and giddy at the prospect of getting away with a cartful of A1 sauce. It's embarrassing as an American to see this and to know the rest of the world is watching. Ummm.....possibly because that is who is doing the looting???? Should the media just stage some caucasians looting to make you happy?
What an astute observation! /s

So Mike Brown should be fired because he doesn't sound like General Patton in his 2000th interview when he is asked the same damn questions he was asked in the other 1,999? How would you do in that situation? Should he have spent tax dollars on a PR consultant so he would sound better on TV? He should get off TV. He is on tv all day, that is WHY he sounds so badly. He has no clue as to what is going on, how could he????
He should make a statement every 6 hours, with some follow up questions by a press pool being asked. Being on 150 channels all day long is a disaster. If a new development occurs in the 4 hours since he started being interviewed, the reporter then asks him about it, and he has no idea what he is talking about.
