28,000 National Guard troops are deployed to the disaster areas in Mississippi, Alabama, and to Louisiana, where SWAT teams are working to combat the looters and shooters in New Orleans. Additional 1400 National Guard troops are being deployed daily.
Shootings reported at a New Orleans hospital, rescue boats, and a military helicopter, while conditions continue to deteriorate at the SuperDome amid refugee deaths and chaos. Evacuation of New Orleans continues.
House Speaker Dennis Hastert has voiced serious doubts about rebuilding New Orleans with federal funds, while assuring the people of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida that the United States Congress stands ready to help them in their time of need. New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin issued a "desperate SOS."
Doctors at two desperately crippled hospitals in New Orleans called The Associated Press Thursday morning pleading for rescue, "We have been trying to call the mayor's office, we have been trying to call the governor's office ... we have tried to use any inside pressure we can. We are turning to you. Please help us," said Dr. Norman McSwain, chief of trauma surgery at Charity Hospital, the largest of two public hospitals.
The Port of New Orleans is now open to shallow draft vessels. Congress is reconvening in an emergency session. International offers to assist the U.S. have been received from Russia, Japan, Canada, France, Honduras, Germany, Venezuela, Jamaica, Australia, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Greece, Hungary, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Mexico, China, South Korea, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, NATO and the Organization of American States.

How certain are you about those numbers? In the Discovery program they said 1/2 million people lived in New Orleans.

most of NO is a ghetto. people come and they see the quarter and the CBD and think everythings all "cool" and fun. But behind the landmarks are 8 story projects with the worst of the worst in human beings. Now the animals are out having fun without any sign of the lazy and corrupt NOPD
Most of what you saw was not looting. These people intended to purchase the items. Unfortunately, the clerks had evacuated the stores. I'm sure the "shoppers" will return with the money once the stores reopen.
Take names. Way to protect your citizens, N.O. cops. Let someone else defend your families and neighbors. We wouldn't want you to take responsibility for anything.
That pretty much sounds like the coverage today on the media. The same was being said about the rescue boats. Something has to be done to stop this nonsense, and quick.
I'm awaiting a call to go down to the New Orleans area and assist with the Southern Baptist's relief effort. They will be providing 300,000 meals per day by Saturday. They're working under the Red Cross... and the Red Cross told them to be ready to ramp it up to over 500,000.
No-one has trashed the Sueperdome but Katrina. Don't you get the news there? And no one in the Superdome has shot at anything. The only people with guns there are the National Guard running the place. They were disarming people of COMBS before they got in there. I suggest you read back a couple of dozen threads and get your facts straight before going off half-cocked.
The helicopters that were shot by someone on the ground or in the city were landing at a parking structure adjacent to the Superdome. The parking structure contains folks that were injured and sick and being treated at a make-shift triage there. They were the only people being medi-vac'd out. The healthy folks in the Superdome are being removed via bus, and waiting patiently in 90+/100% humidity weather, with the only disturbance being the person that occassionally fainted/died from standing in the heat.
There was footage of it all day on TV.
Don't ask me how I came by that data....

Doesn't FEMA give them all an allowance? I read that their food-stamp cards would be good where ever they go people were going to honor them.
One is probably NO proper and one number is the metropolitan area.
I would imagine it would be over a million in the whole area.
That means at least a million people need shelter for months.
That is a lot of people.
A very good point that bears repeating. Even assuming no hurricane, no flooding, no criminal interference, and general optimum conditions, evacuating the entire population of a major American city has never been done before that I can think of. Yet everyone expects it to happen instantly and flawlessly.

the other question I have is - suppose these people want to leave? supposed they just want to leave and live in Houston, go on welfare and public assistance and/or look for employment in Houston and get an apartment. how can they be stopped?
Fate Of Mortgages In Damaged Areas Unclear
Consumer Affairs brings up the new bankruptcy rules that involve natural disasters. "Under the new bankruptcy legislation, homeowners who have refinanced may be liable for the full cost of their loans if they waived their protections when signing their new agreements."
"Such was the fate of many homeowners after a series of landslides in Laguna Beach, California, in June of 2005, the Los Angeles Times reported. It remains to be seen how this will affect bankruptcy or relief petitions in the wake of Katrina."
Insurer AIG has this to say about mortgages in the storm damaged areas. "Mortgage insurer AIG United Guaranty laid out guidelines Wednesday for how it will insure its clients with borrowers in areas affected by Hurricane Katrina. It did not have figures available, but many mortgages could be in potential jeopardy."
AIG insures 4,145 mortgages in Alabama; 7,131 in Louisiana, and 1,644 in Mississippi, a spokeswoman said. AIG said it wanted lenders to make arrangements with borrowers with severe property damage or temporary job losses to prevent foreclosure."
"Chris Goodwin, vice president of Loss Management (said), 'In working with lenders whose customers have been affected, we are prepared to accept a range of reasonable solutions where mortgage payment is concerned.'"
What medicines are there going to be in a Walgreens that are not in a hospital dispensary?
What medicines in a Walgreens are poorer, non-prescription replacements for those that are stocked in a dispensary?
How many days' supply of these supplies are typically in the dispensary?
How badly was the dispensary looted by armed vermin?

You're right, it couldn't have hurt. I have my feelings on the issues being raised along these lines. I just choose to ignore them until we have saved all the people we can.
Not an infinite postponment though, count on that.
