28,000 National Guard troops are deployed to the disaster areas in Mississippi, Alabama, and to Louisiana, where SWAT teams are working to combat the looters and shooters in New Orleans. Additional 1400 National Guard troops are being deployed daily.
Shootings reported at a New Orleans hospital, rescue boats, and a military helicopter, while conditions continue to deteriorate at the SuperDome amid refugee deaths and chaos. Evacuation of New Orleans continues.
House Speaker Dennis Hastert has voiced serious doubts about rebuilding New Orleans with federal funds, while assuring the people of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida that the United States Congress stands ready to help them in their time of need. New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin issued a "desperate SOS."
Doctors at two desperately crippled hospitals in New Orleans called The Associated Press Thursday morning pleading for rescue, "We have been trying to call the mayor's office, we have been trying to call the governor's office ... we have tried to use any inside pressure we can. We are turning to you. Please help us," said Dr. Norman McSwain, chief of trauma surgery at Charity Hospital, the largest of two public hospitals.
The Port of New Orleans is now open to shallow draft vessels. Congress is reconvening in an emergency session. CNN- In Some New Orleans precincts, as many as 50-60% of the cops have DESERTED!
I have one question that is really bothering me. It's great the people can go in and out of the dome so they don't go stir crazy. But, what about people who might go out to get alcohol or other stuff that could cause ultimate problems within the dome. How are they going to control that?
Thirty or forty percent of the police MAY HAVE WALKED OFF THE JOB during the looting according to CNN reporter.
I can buy most of that, still, they didn't steal guns to sell them, they are using them to shoot at people and steal from them.
"And didn't Max Mayfield from the NHC call them also warning them of the # of potential deaths/destruction."
Yes said he would not be able to sleep knowing that a potential disaster could be occurring. After that the evacuation was made mandatory...
Port-o-lets require service after 110 uses.
30,000 people means 300 units...per day, with no repeat business.
I know I'm repeating myself, but the sheer scale of this disaster has yet to sink in for a lot of people.
It takes years to build up your home or apartment. You simply cannot pick up a million people and plant them elsewhere in a time span measured in days. Not even in weeks really, but this is precisely what FEMA is prepping to do.
Thanks, much appreciated!
Oh, they will find someway to blame it on him. Can you believe all the things this president has had to deal with? God brings us thru each time though.
I just listened on a national trucking radio show to a driver who is at a staging area some distance away from NO, on contract with FEMA. He says that they keep trying to send convoys in with supplies, and once they get close the convoys keep getting shot at, forcing them to turn around.
"Thirty or forty percent of the police MAY HAVE WALKED OFF THE JOB during the looting according to CNN reporter."
It's all Bush's fault.
Can't stay awake any longer. Just checked my hometown paper and am pleased to see that New Jersey is sending aid. Here's the link from NorthJersey.com (The Record, Hackensack, NJ) -- see y'all in the morning!

With what money? I am sure there are ground rules...no drinking and smoking...
That's good info. I didn't know.
Thanks.
If this information is correct, you can double the numbers I posted yesterday.
I was saying to my husband last night, that poor W has had it all thrown at him. Poor guy, but thank God for him rather than Gore or Kerry. We'd be up sh!ts creek without a paddle for sure.
Oh, I agree, He was talking about people stealing sneakers, TV's, etc... he didn't deny there was a bad element, but said there was also a lot of people who were just downright desperate because they had nothing. How he knew this? They were coming around the rooms in the hotel he was in trying to sell the stuff to the guests.

Ted Kennedy and the Dems who were "ballot-stuffed, not elected" into office in NO would go through them in 12 hours tops.
Prayers for all!
That's a shame. These people's leadership failed them big time.
Although, just one day's use might have been enough. It's not like they were eating much.
Any extra capacity (especially in a portable and disposable facility) would be welcome.
