28,000 National Guard troops are deployed to the disaster areas in Mississippi, Alabama, and to Louisiana, where SWAT teams are working to combat the looters and shooters in New Orleans. Additional 1400 National Guard troops are being deployed daily.
Shootings reported at a New Orleans hospital, rescue boats, and a military helicopter, while conditions continue to deteriorate at the SuperDome amid refugee deaths and chaos. Evacuation of New Orleans continues.
House Speaker Dennis Hastert has voiced serious doubts about rebuilding New Orleans with federal funds, while assuring the people of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida that the United States Congress stands ready to help them in their time of need. New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin issued a "desperate SOS."
Doctors at two desperately crippled hospitals in New Orleans called The Associated Press Thursday morning pleading for rescue, "We have been trying to call the mayor's office, we have been trying to call the governor's office ... we have tried to use any inside pressure we can. We are turning to you. Please help us," said Dr. Norman McSwain, chief of trauma surgery at Charity Hospital, the largest of two public hospitals.
The Port of New Orleans is now open to shallow draft vessels. Congress is reconvening in an emergency session. International offers to assist the U.S. have been received from Russia, Japan, Canada, France, Honduras, Germany, Venezuela, Jamaica, Australia, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Greece, Hungary, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Mexico, China, South Korea, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, NATO and the Organization of American States.

Not enough emphasis from the ground on how hard the terrain there is with the number of trees down.
How did the reporters get there? What roads? flown in? In since the storm?
You can't just "poof" move supplies through an area where trees and electrical lines litter your path.
The complete lack of education and facts within reporting today is staggering."
You touch on an important point here, one I've not yet had time to bring up.
Blame equations come later, as I've said many times, but the folks talking about a "plan" or lack thereof, especially one involving any use of railroads after the storm, have to understand that a preparedness plan cannot count on any specific assets remaining in place after the storm passes.
You also want to think long and hard about utilizing certain assets before the storm.
Put a traffic jam on a causeway and let the storm catch it there and you have a big problem.

Aaron Brown was interviewing by phone, a former neighbor who now lived in DC and had called in with an eyewitness report on what she had just seen.

Doe- Aaron, I was driving down xyz street, right in front of the Pentagon and a large airliner has just struck the Pentagon !! There's smoke and fire everywhere !

I was incredulous,to say the least, that Brown completely missed what she said and was more interested in her commute to work.
I looked it up because that poster made a great point about how many people France lost because it was hot. Because it was HOT!!!

Know what you mean. When I lived for awhile in the mountains, I got snowed in for 4 days one winter by myself --- had no electricity, just little heat from a gas wall heater, the nearest person was about 10 acres down the road from me.
I read alot, sat outside with my dogs and cats. Fortunately, I had stored up enough food, so that was no problem. The snow was beautiful, and the woods all around were quiet as could be.
Really an experience. After a few days I was ready to see someone in person!
I believe those helos may be from the amphibious assault ship USS Bataan, now stationed off the LA coast. This ship also can carry an LCAC landing craft if necessary, but it is probably loaded with helicopters. Following is a link that explains what they are doing. I am not sure if there are USMC units in the area, but there may be some on board the Bataan. The religion has very little to do with it. It has everything to do with the culture, which while colored by religion, is quite independent of it. The unique characteristics of Japanese society and cultural result in what you see. One only has to look at the vast differences between nominally Christian cultures to see that.
Even radical Muslims aren't that stupid. A terrorist attack on the U.S. at a time like this would generate a hideous, overwhelming response due to public pressure alone. I could easily see the U.S. concocting a story about who was responsible, then laying waste to a major Islamic capital within 48 hours -- just to make a point.

BurbankKarl had picture of a drop on here before I left work. Not a minute too soon. But then I agree with jeffe's asessment that FEMA, takes a while to get setup. It's completely calculated that some folks are going to die so they can save the vast majority. We don't like it. But as people have pointed out it's like a war zone, and these are the types of decisions that need to be made in conditions like this.

That's the first bit of really good news I've read in a while--the first part of the sentence anyway. The second part shows they still don't get it down there. My opinion is they don't have ambulances to spare right now for this tending to.
I think the logistics are just to extreme to actually bus people that far away. Makes sense to try and find something close. Hopefully some will be able to return to LA if all is not lost.

God my mom was furious tonight after having watched him. Maybe that was it. He is a pompous ass and I can stand him less and less every time I watch him (which is rare)
