I keep having the scary thought that if AQ has anything in place to hit us with, now would be an ideal (for them) time to do it.

Even radical Muslims aren't that stupid. A terrorist attack on the U.S. at a time like this would generate a hideous, overwhelming response due to public pressure alone. I could easily see the U.S. concocting a story about who was responsible, then laying waste to a major Islamic capital within 48 hours -- just to make a point.
