I have no problem with people in a situation like this taking food and water and clothing to stay dry. People have children and elderly to take care of. I see no obligation to let those people die in order to keep grocery store shelves stocked with food that will only end up rotting.

Is it just me, or isn't it the height of cruelty to delay this as long as he has?

If they would have put in place and ENFORCED this from the git go, then only a few would need to be shot. Now that number is much larger.

All I hear is they don't have enough help because Bush has the soldiers in Iraq!

but the area needs tens of thousands of federal troops.

Nah, just needs twenty Korean shopkeepers from LA

Sorry but I find it very hard to believe this for several reasons.

One, day late and a dollar short. Much of the damage from looting has been done already.

Two, the only way to stop looters at this point and get the message across is to back up your words with action. That means simply declaring it won't work at this point. You're gonna have to shoot someone.

And lastly, if American soldiers didn't shoot Iraqis during their looting frenzy what makes you think they can shoot their own citizens.

They are, in fact, refugees.

Well, then the Astrodome is now the new Mecca. We'll see the media soon get away from N.O. The African-Americans are just not displaying ANY sort of common sense. It will soon be deemed "racist" to cover these types of stories and we'll not hear of anything except those 'refugees' in the Astrodome.

Fine, but what about stealing TV's and Nike shoes? While were at it I guess they decided to take a few AK47's and loot people's homes. After that why not rape women, and steal the drugs from the hospitals.Typical American reaction to a tradegy that some of these able bodies, who had many prior warnings, could have avoided by simply going to higher ground. I have no pity for such people.

"At word of this the ACLU is sending it's emergency team to the area immediately."

Blam. blam, that scraggly arsed ACLU lawyer looked just like a looter to me, and and maybe posed a threat when he approached me opening his brief case, I thought it could have been a bomb.

Eagle-eyed hindsight. When it was reported yesterday that martial law was imposed we had people screaming about how they couldn't do that. If it actually had been imposed how many comments do you think there would have been about Jackbooted Thugs?

"It is an ugly thing that New Orleans had become long before Katrina. All the hurricane did was to remove the few remaining restraints on a learned behavior pattern - “I can do what I want when I want and no one is going to do anything about it because…."

Dead Center Perfect.

Understood about the powers.

However, powers aside. An elected official can do much, and at the very least be with the people who elected him/her.

The mayor is not doing what he should be doing. The governor is not doing what she should be doing. Comes back again to the basic understanding of leadership. Both of them are clueless.

They may be in over their heads, and I am sure that they are, but at the very least they can get out there dammit, get out there and do what they can. Be an advocate, appeal to the higher angels of the citizens. LEAD dammit. I am totally disgusted.

"...but some of the NO LEO took a break to do some looting of their own."

This is just incredible. You would think they'd be taking the opportunity to SHOOT people rather than steal.

I'm so damned tired of hearing that kind of day-after armchair wisdom from FR rocket scientists today, I believe I'll let the screen door hit me in the ass on my way out of this thread.
