President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.

Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

Prayer for that poor woman and the baby. They will need God's blessings now. It is far from a sanitary birth.

I am hoping that we learn from this experience, and that FEMA and Homeland Security, along with state officials, take lots of notes and adjust their disaster plans accordingly.

Fortunately, there are still waterbomber aircraft in the area, when last I looked.

White House Spokesman Scott McClellan

Scott's always in over his head. I'm sure he's a nice guy, but it's painful to watch him. Probably nerves, but he always looks shifty-eyed and evasive. He's just not the right guy for the job.

"To: jeffers
Boil some string, push, and don't forget to breathe. Tie off the cord twice a couple inches apart, before cutting it. It's been done without medical assistance for right at one million years.

Well, aren't you just so cute. How does one boil water when one has no water, much less fuel?"

I'm not being cute. Reports in this thread have groupd of 100 people stranded with med emergencies calling for and not receiving help for days. Cops pinned down in their station, about to be overrun, calling for help and not getting it.

One lady having a baby, has to get inventive, because it is all she has. The million year comment sounded cute I know it, but it's the quickest thing I could think of to tell her to take the edge off what must be significant fear. if the OP on that has two way comminications with the lady in labor, I stand by my post. This is beyond a triage situation.

The water doesn't have to be potable, but germ free helps. There's gas in every car on the road and a hubcap or tin can will serve as a pot. If that's beyond her means, tie it off with dirty string. Better than the alternative.

Not at all. The wind is howling too. It has spread from one building to 3-4 in 5 minutes.

Anyone else hear that Carnival has offered up some boats for housing? I heard that somewhere yesterday. Are they being taken up on that offer?
