The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.
The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...
Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

Hostage Situation in New Orleans
I groan at all the local TV stations that will tease their weather with "Tropical Storm Lee Forms! Will it be a threat to you?!?! Next in weather."

Police said there were dozens of carjackings overnight, by desperate survivors trying to leave town or obtain supplies.
Somebody fired at a rescue helicopter Tuesday night, forcing its crew to abandon efforts to evacuate patients from a hospital, a state official said.

They're real stupid. Their stupidity and ignorance are most likely why they are in the position to decide to loot in the first place.

Sadly, for many of the elderly, no one will come to ask about them.

Lord know they need someone to yell out for help FOR THEM. I just wonder how long the media can hold out there? Phil Keating said they had to get out of their hotel this morning because the generator was failing due to high water. They tried to go to Baton Rouge but everything was full there.
This is a lesson for all of us. If there is any chance your home is going to be completely damaged from a storm and they say get out, get out. Otherwise, everyone needs to be prepared with food and water to help themselves for days until help is sent. As we can see sometimes it's hard to get help. Even Miss & Ala have no water/ice etc and they are not flooded like NO.
I agree with those who say he can be more effective in Washington, being briefed, making decisions, issuing orders.
But in a crisis like this, people need to see him leading and expressing concern, even if it's brief at this point. And Bush should not leave himself open to the charge of being aloof, especially after the Cindy summer.

Although the Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico are relatively quiet in the wake of Katrina, we are watching the area off the southeast U.S. north of the Bahamas for possible tropical development this coming weekend or early next week. We've identified this region as Tropical Disturbance 38 on the current Tropical Development Outlook. As of today, the area north of the Bahamas is generally free of clouds. But with a weak frontal boundary across that area this weekend, and high pressure building to the north, thunderstorms could begin to cluster northeast of the Bahamas in a few days. If this occurs, then tropical development would be possible. A number of computer models have been suggesting such development for the past few days, in fact.
Should any development occur off the southeast U.S. Coast over the next 4-5 days, then it is possible that the area from the Florida Peninsula to North Carolina could be impacted. With high pressure blocking it to the north, it could either remain stationary or drift to the west. We cannot even rule out the possibility of any such development crossing Florida and entering the Gulf of Mexico, although we think chances of that happening are low at this time.
Elsewhere, it appears that Tropical Depression Thirteen will be upgraded to Tropical Storm Lee by the National Hurricane Center at 4PM CDT. It was located near 29.9N/49.9W, or about 900 miles east-southeast of the island of Bermuda. Movement is to the northeast at at 16-17 mph. Maximum sustained wind is 40 mph. Lee will be no threat to the Caribbean Sea or the east U.S. Coast. It will head out to sea into the open Atlantic and dissipate in 4-5 days.
The NOLA school buses are all underwater.
FEMA commandeered buses from private companies - notably, ones with bathrooms on board.
Is this the hospital that was crying for help earlier, saying the looters were getting into their cars? Prayers going up.
Shooting looters earlier on in the crisis would have been a GOOD idea.
