The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.

The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...

Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

I understand, but one has to be aware of the families working in the New Orleans airport. How much time were they all supposed to sacrifice regarding their own preparation and evacuation? There are so many factors that are always present that I think many people want to just wish away.

I am always amazed at how dependent people are on the government in the United States. Why are not more people responsible enough to have backup and emergency plans? The situation in New Orleans is going to "go down" as one of those infamous examples of that which we all ought not ever get ourselves into again.

God help them all; every single one of them.

They're going to need an armed presence on the street, that's for sure.

That's obvious. The question is: what level of violence is going to be necessary to restore any semblance of order? I don't have a good feel for the number of looters involved here. Is it hundreds or thousands?

Somebody explain to me how the water will drain out. Is the lake now below the level of the water in the city? And if so, how did that happen...I thought the levels would equalize.

They are staging the troops out of Maxwell AFB LA. Governor was late in asking other states for help from what I have been hearing this morning.

I have started a collection of relief funds in my company. Ten minutes after I e-mailed all employees, they have already contributed $250.00. When the prez gets in I'm sure he'll have the company match the employee funds. I'll split between the Salvation Army and the Southern Baptist Disaster Relief...make it $400.00. I just got another $150.00.

Is it hundreds or thousands?

I would think it has to be in the thousands of looters.

Please - take a moment to think through the hysteria. The number one priority right now is search and rescue. Then look at the moon phase right now. It is near new moon. NOLA is not a spot in the middle of a corn field. There are lots and lots of power lines, trees, and other potential threats to both air and sea rescue during broad daylight. Damming the levee at this point will not drain water from the city.

One thing that's very maddening to me right now is how the alphabet networks seem to be ignoring this story.

I know exactly what you mean, Mike - it's infuriating me to no end. The coverage they are giving it now will only last as long as it takes until they and their fellow Northeast liberals get tired of gloating over pictures of the flooded and ruined homes of those ignorant red-state Bush voters, and then it'll be back to all Cindy Sheehan all the time, at least until they can bring us the leftist demagoguery over the John Roberts confirmation hearings.

The only time then that there will be any mention at all of the Gulf Coast will be when they can find another way to attack President Bush with it. And now, they're whining about how the remnants of Katrina are bringing rain to the Northeast. Oh, the horror! "We were going to grill tofu burgers on the back deck today, and now we're going to get rained out! Why is my FEMA money going to those ignorant yokels down south?"

Wow. What an idea. It makes way too much sense for the government to think of, and would take a few ships, but damn, that's a plan. They could all walk to it. You need to be in office!

This was discussed many hours ago. The Pentagon IS sending ships/help.

There's no way those helicopter pilots could safely work in close quarters in the dark.

I disagree ........ but that's just going to have to be it.

With the topography of New Orleans, dunno exactly how dynamiting levees is going to do much. The "low" water, which is flodding New Orleans, is well above the height above most of the city.

looters are breaking into houses

Yeah, well, what can I say on FR?

I've seen the videos of the looting on TV, you've seen the video.

If I said what I wanted to say, I'd be banned. FR has gone PC.

Before he passed, my New Orleans Uncle got the crap beaten out of him by these same people in his own neighborhood.

Thanks for the update however, the house has been sold and all the Aunt and Uncles have passed on.

Having spent time there, I was just curious about how the Upperline and Charles area fared.
