The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.

The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...

Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

The CG spokesman said they were prioritizing calls by priority of need, but will answer all that they can. The NPR person asked why not evacuate? The CG said you can be 200 miles from the eye of the hurricane like his and he got two large trees knocked down.

Hard to say, because we can't see if the southern gates on the lock are open, though the northern gates are. Checking google maps ( http://maps.google.com/maps ), that picture is looking NNE, and so it is draining into the Arabi section, not the central city section. That Arabi bowl(eastern NO) is the one that flooded earliest yesterday, and where yesterday's rooftop flooding and rescue shots were coming from. Also speculated that 22' storm surge from the hurricane overtopped and began filling it from the east. Am wondering if there is now an east breach, and as much of the river that fits through the lock is draining through that bowl to the sea.

I live in Midland, Texas. We can help with housing, food, water, schools, and we have jobs here. FREEP Mail me if you need a place for a couple of months, someplace to call home while disaster relief trickles in and decisions are made.

This is horrific. The whole City of NO has to get out, and I wonder how many thousands are dead, stranded on rooftops and in tall buildings. Earlier, reporters were talking about all the floating bodies. I noticed they have stopped reporting that, but it does not make it any less.

According to news reports, The French Quarter is being flooded from below. The underground pumping system is out, so not just the river and lakes are flowing in.

A major American city almost destroyed, possibly thousands dead, tens of thousands stranded, a huge economic hit, $3.50 a gallon for gas, BUT...

...what's going on in Aruba today?

That press conference was typical bureaucratic assessment-itis.

Take time to look, no immediate acts for unanticipated circumstances, looting, levee breach.

Reminds me how the UN/NGOs talked after the tsunami. All talk about taking action.

Haven't seen anything posted on the police officer shot by the looter. On top of everything else, they've got to deal with this.

If you don't know it is occuring because it is hidden by water on the protected side, it will eventually undermine that whole section of the levee and cause a major failure above it.

That's what I wondered: if the breech at the river levy could even be seen, considering all the flooding. My goodness gracious... there may be water coming in from the river and a bigger catastrophe in the works.

Looks like they are rallying a work crew and getting ready to go to work. The guy interviewed said he was scared that many may not even rebuild...the whole thing is unbelieveable.

Bay St. Louis and Waveland, MS were the hardest hit during Camille. That is where the horror stories about the Hurricane Party came from and other stories. I have just gotten information from one family who got ran out of their house and got into a small sailboat tied in the back yard where they rode it out. They claim the water level from this storm is much higher than Camille. The US 90 bridge in Bay St. Louis is gone. More than likely the railroad bridges that run through there are gone also. It appears ALL of the casinos are gone also.

Read a site today that said if you add red wine to water it can act as a purifier. Not as good as clorox, iodine, or peroxide, but better than nothing. Of course, if you had the red wine, why would you add it to the dirty water, LOL. Seriously though, 1 part red wine to 3 parts water has an antimicrobial effect on the water (won't prevent giardia or cryptosporidia though.)

St. Paul knew what he was talking about. Wine was known in antiquity for its antiseptic qualities with less-than-perfect water supplies.
